I'm looking at buyng a used car and have found a few out of state. How exactly are the following types of things handled (my assumptions in parentheses)?

Title (just go to title transfer place transfer there)
Insurance (I call in the vin to my insurer and I'm done)
License plate (??? How do I drive it home)
Taxes (pay in my parish when I register it (state and parish only or federal too))
Any other fees or things (costs) I need to consider?

they will charge you parish tax there, just make sure you get it right or you will be cutting a check when you go to register

I bought my truck out of state. Everything was simple, except they got my taxes wrong so I had to write a $1200 check when I went to register in LA.

How do you get the temporary plate?

So technically you didn't spend extra on taxes, just not enough initially?

They will call LA DMV and get all taxes/fees. They SHOULD take care of all of this free of charge. Very simple process.

I would think your bill of sale and title would be fine in lieu of license plate for a day or two.

I recently bought a car from a private party from Alabama. The bill of sale will need to be signed by both parties and notarized. The title will need to be signed by both parties but we didn't get that notarized. I took the bill of sale, title and proof of insurance (they will likely do the initial insurance over the phone but will ask you to bring it in) to an express dmv type place in Baton Rouge. I paid the tax (varies according to where you live in La.), title and license fees and was in and out in about 15 minutes. The TTL including the $18 they charged was around 10% of the purchase price of the car.

Buy the car. Have title and bill of sale notarized at the time of sale. Drive vehicle back to Louisiana and when you register it pay the taxes.
