Would you take a promotion with another company if it meant less money (5k) in the short term (1-2 years), with the ability to gain knowledge and experience and possibly expedite you career path?

Well I took a job where I started out making about $20-$25k below market for what ended up being 1.5 years (typically ranges from 1-3 years) and now make much more and am happier/more successful than I was before. Obviously it being my first job and not being married/no kids it gave me more liberty to do what I wanted. I'd say if you and your dependents can survive on $5k less a year (which is like $250 a month after taxes) then yes I would.

Nothing wrong with that if you have a vision.

Yeah consider it an investment.

The worst thing you could do to yourself is sit in a dead end job where you're doing the same thing every year. You'll wake up and instead of having 10 years of relevant experience it'll be 1 year done 10 times.

Well what I am doing now has a lot of room for growth, this just might expedite the process and get me to the next step sooner.

I guess it depends on how much that 5k is worth to me. I'm about to receive a huge raise (wife is graduating), so I would take it if I liked the job more, or felt that there was more growth there.

Also, I would take other factors into consideration (location of the new position mainly). If you have a shorter commute or more amenities near your new job, or if your job is in a different city that is also something to consider.

Everything is pretty much exactly the same, except for maybe some pre-tax deductions.

I guess it would then really only depend on how much 5k affects my life. If I'm going from 150k to 145k, it probably won't affect me much. If I'm going from 50k to 45k, it'll probably affect me more.

It's also a much easier decision if you don't have a family. As a single guy, that 5k probably doesn't matter much.
