Has anyone taken/passed the PMP exam from the Project Management Institute? Any particular stories worth sharing with regards to hiring and the cert's worth?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I've got mine. Really depends on the field you work in or want to work in.
IT projects seem to put a premium on having it. I work in O&G and it's doesn't mean much.
If you have experience managing projects of any real size you should be able to pass after reading a few books and taking some practice exams.
I do know the testing recently changed to coincide with the release of the 5th edition of PMBOK.

The IT company I work for pretty much makes it a requirement for PMs we hire.
I'll be getting mine early next year, but I'm the only PM in my group without it, I believe.

Does anyone think it's worth it to get the CAPM, offered by PMI? I'm early in my career and have been working on an IT/IS project team for the past 2+ years. I eventually want to get into IT project management (within the next 5 years or so).

Same here. Did all the prep work, but never got the cert.

It's not going to hurt. I thought it was helpful to get comfortable with the testing format for the PMP.
I wouldn't expect it to make a huge difference in hiring/$$$$.... but it won't hurt.

Thanks. I may take it, I'm not really sure yet. I already have a decent amount of PM knowledge from working on this project, as well as taking classes in my graduate program(6 credits shy of graduating) that focus on PM. I was really wondering if it would help when I attempt to move into a PM position in about 4 years.
My apologies for the hijack
For those of you who are currently in IT PM, what job/role were you in before moving into PM?

ITIL v3 and PMP will open up some doors

I'd say yes.
I also agree with other posters that say that the PMP is probably more important in the IT world.
With that in mind, I'd probably encourage the CAPM. It would probably signal to employers to put you on "projects." If you review the requirements of the PMP, you need to collect a pretty good number of hours on project tasks to take the exam. I'd make sure to review those requirements and try to align your role/tasks with those requirements as soon as is feasible.

Definitely think it is worth it in the IT world, might as well go ahead and take the CAPM if your company will pay for it since it is basically a prep for the PMP once you have the experience.

like others have said...its pretty much required in IT. in construction or engineering, not so much.

I'm studying for it now with plans to take the test in March/April 2014. I have a friend who just got a job with Shell as a Sr. Project Manager. He ended up increasing his salary by 25%. He got his PMP two years ago. He also holds a MBA so I don't know if that played a role in his offer. He told me that the hiring manager said that one of the main reasons he got the job was because he held a PMP cert. b/c it demonstrated that he had a good understanding of how to run projects.
I'm looking to do the same for myself after I acquire my PMP. Hopefully, it turns out the same for me.

Thanks, I'll probably take the CAPM in a year or two, I've read that it's only valid for 5 years. Very doubtful that my employer will pay for it, because I'm not currently in a PM role.

I've seen in my experience that anyone who pays the money can get a PMP. That being said, I have no interest. I've also noticed that it doesn't teach people that certain methods only work in certain situations, i.e. using a CPI usually doesn't work on a lump sum job. It only teaches the methods and the formulas. I've seen clueless PMs who've gotten PMP certs and then got fired or moved. I am a CM with an MBA fwiw.

To be honest this is pretty true, the knowledge is extremely impractical and there are far too many PMPs who can't run a project for shite.
Unfortunately it is still a pre req for a lot of PM jobs just due to the "speak the same language" factor.
