Looking at two different mutual funds to start up with. Wellington - VWELX or VTSMX - total stock market index ....both have a good long term history and good growth over time. I'm leaning towards VTSMX. Would you reccommend these or one over another ?
I have a 401 with a company match of 4% but I have extra income and looking to start investing. I'm 26, so I have time to take on more risk now.

Everyone is going to ask if you have an Emergency Fund.
So do you?
After that, I don't know why any one at 26 years old would go mostly bonds. At least, that's the prevailing wisdom.

I've got enough to cover 6-8 months of bills in savings so I guess so.

Wellington-(VWELX) is an excellent fund, but as the other poster alluded to, the portfolio is comprised of roughly 35% bonds and 65% stocks.
VTSMX is nearly 100% comprised of stocks and would probably be a better option for someone with your time horizon.

Dump it in VFFVX. It's about 90/10 and part of that is inclusive of VTSMX. It will auto-adjust the percentages to increase the bond holdings as you age.

VTSMX is what I gathered from the many other threads on here

Are there lower fees if you invest in VTSMX through a Vanguard IRA rather than another brokerage? In other words, is it worth me opening an IRA just to purchase VTSMX rather than doing so through TDA as I normally would?

Another opening a roth IRA question...
If I plan on opening a roth IRA for 2014, should I throw $5500 into it this week? Or spread out the contributions to every other week or so for the next month and a half?
Thanks

I just put the entire $5500 in for 2014 a few weeks ago. I guess it really doesn't matter. If you have the money, then just put it all in at once.

Throw the entire $5500 into the Roth to get it funded/loaded. You can then spread out the contributions as liberally as you wish.

Is it cheaper to invest directly with Vanguard or go through fidelity, scottrade, ameritrade, etc?
