I have been receiving a promotional offer for the Citi American Airlines card that gives $50,000 bonus miles for spending $3,000 within the first three months. This would be easily attainable and me and my wife would like to take a vacation around labor day. The rewards could potentially cover the cost of flying.

My question of course is this: Is it worth the hit on my credit to open a new account just to get a free flight? My current credit score is around a 790 so I'm on solid ground. I currently use two cards: one Discover that I've had since college and use as my primary spending card to earn cashback and a Capital One mastercard that I pretty much only use as a backup for places that don't accept discover.

I always pay my balance off at the end of the month and never pay interest.

Could be as many as 2-3 free flights, if you play your cards right.

I'd go a step further and get two separate accounts for you and your wife. 100k miles comes in handy.

Do you plan on applying for any other type of credit in the next two weeks? If so I would go ahead and apply for it anyways. You will get auto accpeted and I doubt it negatively effects your score at all.

Read an article this morning that if you sign up for an airline rewards credit card prior to the end of the summer you will miss out on at least 15% of the signing bonus. The article said that all of the domestic carriers increase their bonuses after Labor Day, with November being the best month to apply for a card.

I suggest you first decide where you want to vacation. 50K offer on this card is not a rarity. Go through the last few pages of the rewards points discussions thread to get an idea of this.

In short the answer is: there are better cards out there so I don't think you should apply for this one first.

Yes. Well worth it. I Just booked two round trip this week for the wife and i to Miami in June for 50k pts.

During my search, I noticed that You can pretty much get two round trips anywhere in continental US for 50k pts.

- received my card in November and will cancel after we return.
