I'm down on COP by quite a bit. I'm not doubling down, though. I'll hold because I can afford to, but I'll add positions in other oil players where I can still get a dividend.

Nope.

ETA: But I did go long on JPM yesterday afternoon, 1,500 shares @ $57.02/share. It's at $58.70 as I type this.
Also went long(er) on XOM yesterday afternoon, 1,000 shares @ $80.55. It's at $81.37 right now.

I've had a good week today....

It helps make up for your IBKC short.

It sure does, although I closed out that short the day after I made it, lost about $2,000.

Maybe a slight hijack.

Would any of you consider investing in an LNG export operation? Low oil/gas prices currently but in the long run, will these operations thrive as Europe and China will buy LNG from the US?

I'm too ignorant about that, so, that's a no for me.

Understood. Posted to you but anyone else have any thoughts on this type of operation?

I heard they were hiring yesterday. Went and checked the stock price and it was up. I don't know if that news was the cause though...

I think the immediate future of gas is exporting. Could be the long term future as well. There's a lot that's been written about it, and a lot of analysts think gas export companies do have a bright future. Eventually.

Having said this, I don't know enough about who the players are, or will end up being to take a stab at it. Natural gas exports are a fairly recent phenomena. I think there was some political pressure to stymie it if I recall correctly. Also, while oil storage is tracked in arrears, natural gas storage is pretty accurately tracked. We have a bunch of gas in storage. I suspect the opportunity you're looking at is that natural gas in the US is significantly cheaper than anywhere else in the world right now. Someplace in that equation has to be eventually lowered prices abroad due to our increased exports. If we can export LNG in a way that is economically viable.

Again, I know relatively little about this, so I wouldn't take anything I posted here as anything other than some stuff I read, and think I remembered correctly.

I'd start with resources such as this one below if I were you:

Thanks for the link. I have heard and read that China is slowly trying to phase out it's coal energy problems and that US gas could potentially be a long term viable solution. Could be a great thing for LA in the long run.

I have 2,000 shares of LNGLF, one of the plants that is still in planning stages down in Lake Charles. I'm averaged at right over $1, and I still believe in it enough to pick up a few more shares when things start turning around, but I feel like this specific one is going to be flat for a while, so I'm just holding what I got.

That's my very limited, non-professional opinion.

But I've also read that one of the reasons China is building those man-made islands in the South China Sea, much to the consternation of Viet Nam, Philippines and the U.S., is they believe there are large natural gas deposits in that area and they want to stake a territorial claim on the area so they can obtain exclusive drilling rights. If they are correct and they get to keep the territory around those "islands" they may not need any U.S. natural gas.

The Chinese think very long term. I guess that comes with being a 5,000 year old civilization.

One example of that is a famous quote by Mao Tse Tung when he was asked in the 1960's what his thoughts were about the French Revolution in the late 1700's which overthrew the French monarchy.

He replied, "It's too soon to know."

That's pretty interesting info

BTW this is from BP research:

quote:

Natural gas replaces oil as the leading fuel in US energy consumption around 2025 – increasing from 30% today to 38% in 2035. Oil’s share of the fuel mix is the lowest on record and continues to fall to 32% by 2035.

SIAP, I'm not reading through this whole thread.

Off the top of my head I'd look to Europe. The wildcard there is probably Russia. I think China is a non starter. I don't know anything about their history, but I do know I wouldn't trust them. Including their buying LNG. Their leadership has demonstrated to me that they will do anything to keep the balls juggling. That's not a pro-Trump statement, that's based purely on what they've already tried to do, and already done to their own equity market to keep monies from flowing out of it.

You have an interesting idea. I saw on one of the shows, Cramer I think, an interview with one exporter that was positioned well. I wish I could remember who it was.

Doesn't matter. Good topic as it got me away from taxes for a moment.
