My wife and I just had out first child this year. Some things we expected and didn't expect.

1) born 5 weeks early so stayed in the NICU for 12 days. We've already met our 5K max for him.

2) daycare - we found one that supplies the formula, which is a cost taken away for us

3) formula - wife was expecting to breast feed but milk never came in

4) dr visit copays. He's been in and out of the dr office with ear infections. Getting tubes this week. Glad we already met his max....

Congrats on being new parents. Im expecting my second in Feb. Is daycare mandatory for you guys? Or do the bills require your wife to work?

Prescriptions, sleepless nights, $$$, nebulizers, doctors visits, runny noses, crying, fevers. My wife nursed for a year and everything was fine. She took a lead teacher daycare job, and took our daughter with her for 3 months, and she was very sickly for 3 months. That experiment ended real quick.

I have three. My wife works 1 or so days a week. Had stayed home for the last five years. God I wish she would go back to staying home. Life was so much easier for me.

We do day programs for them whether the wife works or not. She would kill one of em if she didn't get a break. But no real high costs outside of clothes, food, etc. The two little ones combined cost about half of what the seventeen year old costs. shite, you just bleed money. Camps, clothes, car, insurance, she does her part but still costs a fortune.

I would imagine each little boy 5 and 3 costs us about 600 additional per month, the sister....who knows. College next year will make this seem like a bargain

Yes, for now Daycare is mandatory. We live downtown Chicago so cost of living is pretty crazy right now. We're looking into nanny share's because we're both afraid of how sick kids get at a daycare with 15+ kids. Not sure how much longer we're going to live DT or even in IL for that matter. We're both from south (KY for her and GA for me) so a move south may be close. I can easily transfer with my job and she may be able to transfer as well. I work out of the house which may help with daycare costs, but I also travel 50% of the time so i'm not always going to be here.

Don't be too afraid. My kid went at 3 months. He gets sick but it is normal. His immune system is building up and he knows how to play with other kids.

I have friends that don't do daycare...kid still gets sick. There will always be tons of people in your kids life sharing germs. I think the best long-term plan is to build up their immune system and let them gain social skills.

For me it was
- $20/week formula
- ~$200 / month diapers butt wipes whatever else diapers.com sells.

Did not cut back on alcohol, but did on dinners out.

Speaking of which, find a good babysitter now.

Also - Daycare is great for their social skills. And all kids get sick no matter what. I've had 2 in daycare and the eldest is ready for kindergarten. I've never had / heard of anyone getting so sick that it ended up being anything other than a copay, with the exception of maybe an ER visit from an extremely overconcerned new parent (yeah that jackass was me).

You can't budget for babies....you will be disappointed at what you think is right versus what you actually spend...the only thing you can control off the bat is formula, your wife needs to breast feed for as long as possible - formula is expensive..

Great value brand - don't think for a second the name brands are any better - read the ingredient labels...

Breastfeed man if she can. It is cheaper and better for the baby. This is a proven medical fact. Sometimes it just doesn't work for one reason or another and it is hard. But my wife is so happy she did it and swears it has led to some special bond with our daughter. But in the spirit of this board it does save a shitload of money

Biggest expense for us is daycare ($670 per month) and the fact that my wife cut down to 3 days per week...she worked too much before and would never see the baby. But we still pay for full time daycare, which is lovely.

So probably an extra grand of expenses and $2K less coming in...is not that great
