Need guidance buying health insurance.

Getting laid off and I'm no longer gonna have health insurance through my employer. I don't even know where to begin looking for health insurance. My current plan cost $158 every paycheck (biweekly) and has a $2000 deductible. Not married and no kids so only need a plan for myself. I need help on where to look and what to look for. Has anyone had any experience on this that they can provide some guidance?
TIA

Obtaining COBRA coverage while you look should be step 1 if you don't want to lapse. Just tell you employer you want it.
You'll likely end up on the exchange for your new coverage.

Do you have any prospects for a new job?
Is COBRA an option?
Is Obamacare an option?

I'd like to avoid COBRA due to the high premiums. I haven't looked into Obamacare yet, I will. I was wondering if anyone had any stories or suggestions of buying health insurance through say Blue Cross Blue Shield?
As for the job hunt, there are possibilities but its not critical for me to get right into a new job. I don't need to rush into a situation if its not right. However, once I do get laid off, I will need to get health insurance regardless of the job situation so I'm looking now. What is the penalty for being uninsured?

You've been paying $316 a month already. Is that number significantly subsidized? COBRA just allows you to keep your current insurance for 6 more months (I think). There would just be no subsidy for you anymore.

It can be done, but you probably don't want to have a lapse in coverage. You need to call them now.

You need to find out how much your COBRA policy will be. It will probably be cheaper than if you just buy your own Blue Cross policy. I think we were able to keep COBRA for 18 months.
We now have an Obama care policy and it is crap! If we bought our own coverage through Blue Cross, pre-existing conditions wouldn't be covered. Not good for me so we are stuck with awful health care providers through Obama care.

This is simply not correct, no health insurance plan can use preexisting conditions as any part of the underwriting procedure
to the OP, go to the marketplace @ healthcare.gov and begin the process to pick out a plan

From my understanding, and it's probably wrong, don't I have to pay my portion plus what my employer was paying as my COBRA premiums?

I'll look at healthcare.gov today

This is what my husband found out after dozens of phone calls. The only insurance available to us in Mississippi at healthcare.gov is the crappy Ambetter insurance.
We can't get any other policy through the marketplace. Believe me, we tried! Like I said, he was told by one of the major carriers that they could sell us a policy but pre-existing conditions would not be covered. I suppose this is because it is not officially offered through the marketplace here in Mississippi.

Look into sharing ministries. There are six of them. Samaritan, Liberty, Medishare, Christian Healthcare Ministries, and two others I can't remember. CHM is the best one if you're Catholic. Liberty is the one you want if you're not a practicing Christian. Don't know as much about the others.
Premiums and deductibles are lower than traditional insurance because they don't have to cover "essential" benefits.
