I have always viewed Dave and Burger King as the same. Both prey on the poor and stupid.

Good post. That really annoys me. Talk about lowballing you..they give you an offer of 2.4x the original offer when you decline. wtf?

I would never want to work for a place that thinks the mere act of being employed by them is a tangible benefit.

Not surprised, though, since he's so popular and has a cult like following of people who suck at managing their money. He probably has a pretty low opinion of people

After reading that article, his reported paranoia makes sense. Word gets out on the house of cards he's built, and it could come crumbling down.

As others have said, I too am skeptical of businesses that emphasize their Christianity.

I started listening to him a while back, not because I was in debt, but just to pick up some advice and inspiration.

I have since found Clark Howard and never listen to Dave anymore. Howard is a super nice guy and much more realistic about his guidance. Seems like the opposite of DR. I'd advise anyone listening to Dave to check Clark out.

They are licensed professionals, but the "ELP" mantra is a marketing tool. Doesn't mean much other than another avenue to gain a customer base.

I'm on a professional committee with a CPA from a northern, very white, very rural, very religions place. She was raised in MS and is a huge SEC fan, so we have a lot to talk about at meetings and such.

We were at a meeting last week and were up one night at the hotel bar, about 5 of us, just shooting the breeze. She told us that at the beginning of the year, her small firm (of which she is a principal) became an ELP.

ELP means Endorsed Local Provider, so of course, there is money involved. She said they paid $3,500 to be an ELP (not sure if that's per year or what). She said the process took a few months, there were some online questionairres, phone interviews, you had to swear to promote Dave's debt free ideals, etc.

She said they have so far gotten about 15 new clients directly from the ELP website, but they are all very small, not very complicated, $300 type returns. All of them are white and very religious. They are the only ELP tax firm within about 150 miles.

Because I know her, I know she is a very capable tax CPA and would do a great job for her clients. She knows her stuff. But from what she described, the process of becoming an ELP is less about technical know-how and more about paying the fee and appearing to be a nice person who will promote being debt-free.

I've considered applying for a web development position there. Read something recently where they purchased 600 acres and are building a new campus to move into. They're up to 500+ employees and plan on adding like 100-200 more soon. Business must be booming.

If you are doing business with a person who brings up church often or has conspicuously displayed christian jewelry you should beware. My experience anyway.

Also, if your financial advisor is a big vocal christian....run. Run far away.

Im sure it is. Lots of financial idiots out there. I work with a guy who is on my same level who spends like theres no tomorrow and doesn't save for retirement (we have a 7% dollar for dollar match).

And some people thrive in the sort of work culture that he has. I don't want to discourage you from applying - That wasn't my intent. It just came off as a weird place to me. But its been 11 years since that happened to me.

Side note: My Moes Southwest Grill guy is now the CIO, according to Linkedin.

I'm glad to know all of this. My church is doing that Financial Peace University thing, and I didn't go along with it... Something just seems off with the whole deal.

A few weeks ago he told someone not to consolidate debt into a lower rate and just focus on his debt snowball method.

I couldn't believe it.

I've heard him do that. I've also heard him "approving" of someone consolidating once they've established their baby step street cred and argue the whole time his debt snow ball would work better..
I occasionally listen for the stories. Some of the callers have real life "meat and potatoes" lessons. There are also some absolute morons but I still get something out of it.
