Only a handful of moments in life that truly change the path you go down.
Where you go to college is arguably the first one you make for yourself as an "adult". It impacts who are your lifelong friends, how well you are educated, how well you grow up socially, what city you will forever have a connection to, what job placement opportunities come with it, etc.
It really is a big deal.

I think this is also a good point. Many companies have a set of schools that they build a relationship with to recruit future employees. It isn't a thing necessarily some perceived prestige that drives all of it. Other factors could be geographic location related to the company work area and their former success with recruits at that university. It could be that certain senior executives are alumni and want to recruit their own school.
