know plant managers make around 250k, so an upper management job has to be close to that.
A engineering manager at a plant making over $200K regardless of experience or education is going to be pretty rare. Salary vs postion level tends to follow almost an expotential curve, the jump from a managment level where there are multiple positons to a level occupied by only one person can easily cause compensation to double or more.

Can neither confirm or deny but I know a project manager isn't making 200k. The PM manager isnt even making that.

dont forget to deduct %30 for taxes so you dont really make alot to bring home. that job is overrated with that ungodly amount taken in taxes and your life expectancy goes down as well. my grandfather retired from exxon and right after got sick for 10 years and all of his organs shut down. all because of the oil industry. so look at the big picture.
Well, my grandfather spent 40 plus years in oil and gas industry....he died at age 96, so I guess he would have lived much longer had he not been exposed all those years.
As far as the taxes, yeah that does suck...I need to find another job that pays as much but doesn't get taxed as much - any ideas?? thanks

My brother? He is pushing 43 by the way. Never knew he made that much, damn. Still probably less than my other brother. Boy did I screw up.

Will definitely call bs on the Exxon guy's friend making $200k. My ole man was a senior section supervision and a project manager on a number of large turn arounds over his 30 yr career at Exxon(plastics, refinery). He was also one of the lead guys getting the Beaumont plant back running when that hurricane wiped the plant out. He never sniffed $200k. Your friend is lying to you. Call his bluff.

There seems to be a lot of BS "calling" in this thread.
I'm pretty familiar with Mechanical Engineer salaries in the O&G industry. Larger refinery/chemical plant jobs (think big 3, Shell, Chevron, Exxon; Marathon and others can be up there too) will easily reach the higher end salaries mentioned here. These companies are not exactly easily to get into, but once you do, you are set.
In 2008, I started in mid-80s. Today, we are hiring in mid-90s.
Engineers today, who've been working 15-20 years are pushing $200k salaries. Remember, with inflation, retired engineers weren't making as much (salary boom recently). In 2008, we had 30+ yr guys retiring at only $180k-ish. As mentioned, a lot of it also based on how often you are willing to move, as that can dramatically increase salary.
This is reflective of larger companies. Smaller engineering firms will not be able to match these numbers.

I don't doubt that he does at all. He is on the IT side if that makes a difference

Meh. Whatever.
I'll be in the $150K-$175K range in the next 2 years.

Don't tell him I told you that.
And no, he'll be 42 in June. He's only 3 weeks older than me.

I'm at $130K and I know I can get another 20% if I tried. The engineer salaries are exploding all over the Gulf region. I have an Uncle who has been in the industry for about 30 years and he told me this is the craziest it has been since he started working for Linder.
I know of a junior engineer who was offered over $140K and they only had 6-10 years worth of experience.

I can definitely confirm a plant operations manager that makes ~$240k. I'm doing cost entitlement work for an O&G company.
Posted on 4/11/13 at 8:46 pm to Tmacelroy12
I received a call from someone about 10 days ago looking to fill positions (didn't say who) and the salary was ~$85/hour, which is ~$177K.
I've been at consulting firms since graduation in 2001 (late start due to active duty) and the rates are getting ridiculous around here.

The oil industry apparently pays twice as much as every other, or close to it. I'm in the nuclear. There's guys who make a lot ($120k+), but they are few and far between.
