Seriously though, anybody got any suggestions.
I'm trying to be brief while highlighting my positives.

If you are applying to big name schools, cough up the money and get a pro to work on them with you.
The essays vary from school to school.

They're due on Wednesday. Would you consider Tulane a big name school?

Probably not. I don't think that admission to Tulane's MBA program is competitive enough to spend money on the essay.

FWIW I sent Tulane an email on Friday asking about late submissions. If I go I probably won't go till next year though, I need to get a whole year of experience and see that I'm treading water still to justify it.

I thought you were at UNO grad school?

Dude, you really like school huh?

I really want to do what I want to do, and I'm afraid I'll keep missing those opportunities without a more prestigious name on my resume. I'm hoping to have an off-the-record/non-interview conversation about that with a major firm (dad's friend) in Houston some time next week. If the guy tells me "yeah you know how it is, people in finance are snobs about degrees," then I'll fix that issue and just fricking do it. I'm hoping he says otherwise and that my recent experience was an isolated incident where the firm just has an overly strong allegiance to Tulane.
ETA: And I'll know if he's lying to me, because his firm has openings, and I'm going to send him my resume either way to tell me what I need to fix [aka what would I need to do for YOU to hire me].

It's not that tough. Don't stress over the essay. I got in with a 640 GMAT and didn't spend much time on the essay. Just get someone who is pretty good at grammar to proof read it and you'll be fine.
So what made you go with the MBA over the MFIN route?

What is that exactly? Just curious. Forgive me if you've explained before.

Business Valuation/M&A. In the long run, doing something with distressed assets would be awesome, but that is really a pipe dream.

Vulture investing? That is some cool stuff. I had a student subscription to the Turnaround Management Association a little while back, but only had a passing interest.
Maybe you can be the next Carl Icahn or Edward I. Altman one day.

I know I throw stones, but I've considered applying to an Ivy league Mfin program if I can't find anything after graduation.

You and me both brah. I'm waiting to talk to this guy, but at this moment, my expectation is to be back in school in august 2011. Parents think its nuts, but they have a different viewpoint.
ETA: And realistically I've known this to be a likely option for over a year.

Professional students?
I am hoping not to go back to school for quite awhile once undergrad is over.
Are there literally no jobs for CPAs and MBAs in LA?
It will be very interesting to see where I can get a job right out of undergraduate. I'll probably apply to Mercer, MK, Suntrust, The big 4, etc.

There are, they're just not the jobs that I want. Getting a B4 entry-level job is impractical if you didn't intern or get an on-campus interview, and none of the B4 offices here have BV practices (they're all in Houston). The local CPA firms do BV work, but its a side service, not a focus, and they don't do stuff nearly as technical as the focused places (of which there is only one in nola, that I'm aware of). I applied for a job at Whitney last week. Even though its not exactly what I want to do, it will definitely provide a good experience base, so I won't feel like I'm treading water if I'm there. We'll see how that pans out.
