Getting married soon and about to purchase the first home. As excited as I am, I find myself getting extremely nervous and worried about the bill paying process.

The money is there but how did you set up your bank accounts with you S/O? Joint? Separate? Seperate and a joint?

Thanks!

Joint. What's mine is hers and what's hers is mine. Seriously. We share common financial goals so I can't imagine it any other way. Anything less than $100 purchase we don't need to discuss. Any more and we'll talk about it first. Before you ask, I make twice what she does and it doesn't matter.

Joint?...y'all weird. You are married with separate accounts and split bills, really? She can divorce you whenever she wants and gets half of your bank account no matter what.

I don't understand this. It seems like it would be very odd.

Do you split the check when you go to dinner?
Do you pay your own way at the movies?
Did you pay for your own cars?
What about daycare and when children come along? Who pays for the kids' food, clothes, medical bills, etc?

also, when it comes to debt, credit, loans, etc. doesn't your spouse's financial background affect your own credit?

Joint for us. Promotes communication, something that many couples lack.

That's what I would recommend. That way you don't have to keep track of each other stopping at the grocery store or filling the gas tank.

What do you want, a merger, a joint venture, or an equity stake? And is she to be held-to-maturity or held-for-trading? Available for sale?

We had a kid in college so we started out broke but together

We have always had a joint account, even before we got married

I handle the bills usually

Joint account for everything. All bills/expenses come from there.

So if my credit is better than hers, will it be affected because hers is lower?

This. I take care of bills for the most part. She handles groceries. All from the same account.

But really, we put everything on a credit card that gets paid off completely every month from that account. Cash back + good credit.

????. I just bought a new car for my daily use, why would I put my wife's name on the loan. I didn't need her income for loan approval therefore her financial background or credit had nothing to do with anything of mine. Why does she need to be tied to debt for my car

Best answer here. Almost the same as what we do.

we combined accounts when we got married. In the beginning we made about the same, then my wife made way more for a few years and now I make way more. Just think of it as our money

Well if her credit score allows you to get a better rate? And isn't it y'all's car?
