Hey everyone, I'm currently signed up for FIN 701 (Vines) for Summer AP1 and MADM 760 (Meeks) + ECON 705 (Shaughnessy) for Summer AP2. Anyone have any advice/tips for these courses? TIA

Vines 701- Watch the zoom sessions he posts if you can't make them live. Focus on the reading guide and do all of the practice problems assigned.
Meeks 760- No worries, a lot of busy work/weekly group work so far very easy grader. I am in week 5 right now
Shaughnessy 705- Quizzes were a little tricky. Make sure you can do the practice assignments and have those in front of you and you should be fine. Video quizzes and everything else should be easy 100's because you get 2 attempts.

Awesome, thanks for the advice!

Which is deceitful. It's not an easy course. Most people I knew who took it struggled to make a B.

So here is my situation: I need Mkt 701 and Madm 701 plus an elective to graduate this summer. I need those 2 plus Fin 720 to grad with the Finance concentration. Mkt and Madm are only offered during AP1 from what I can see, so I would have to double up, which many advised against with those classes. Fin 720 isn't offered at all this summer. My question is do I stick to my guns and do Fin 720 in the fall and graduate then? Or do I double up with these hard classes and take an elective so i can graduate this summer? If I go that route, anyone have any suggestions for an easy elective?

Correct Paul, I should have worded that better. The weekly quizzes are pretty tough and you only get one chance at those. All the other assignments are fairly simple and straight forward and should be easy to make A's on. I really didn't see the relationship/correlation between the weekly quizzes and videos etc. I was fortunate to pull out an A in that class.

A lot of this depends on one's background. Mine is accounting, math, Excel, etc. I finished with 98s in both ECON and FIN without a huge amount of effort. However I struggle mightily in classes with any significant writing or research... like the MADMs. It's not something I'm accustomed to or enjoy doing. That makes these class advice posts difficult to answer.

What about ISDS 705 with Dr. LIN? seems like alot of information. Has anyone taken 705 with him? If so how was it?

I took Dr. Lin and like any class, attend, do your homework and see him in his office if you need help. A very kind man.

I'm taking MADM 752 next term and the textbook will be online through Cengage Brain. Does anyone know of any active coupon codes for Cengage? I've tried quite a few and all expired. My online textbook costs $110.

Can anyone, preferably an alumni, tell me if they thought this program helped them out?? Did it open up doors for you that you wouldn't have opened if you didn't complete the program?
I am so torn about doing it. I don't want to take out a huge loan for something that isn't going to benefit me in the long run.
I know the deadline for the next session is soon and if I'm going to do it I would like to get started on it ASAP. Or should I wait? Save up for a year and try to do it so I don't have to take out any loans.
Any help would be useful. Thanks!

I would recommend knowing what the purpose of obtaining your degree. Is it for career advancement in your current field or is it to get a specific job or just in general to obtain a job? If its for a specific job, then yea loans ASAP would probably be worth it. If its to get a job in general, you may want to look into getting a job and your employer may help or at least they can advise you what an MBA can do for you. (that is my route), or if its just for career advancement you may want to save up and try not to get loans.

It really depends on your situation.
Based on the bio's of the people in my classes, I'd say the majority are in a similar situation to where I was... management or upper level employee looking to get to the senior or "C" level at any firm. In that is your situation, I don't see a negative to exploring the program. I've been actively searching that level employment since November and they almost all require an advanced degree.
Another common bio I see is people in a non-business field in their organization. These individuals appear to be looking to move up the chain in their respective company. Again, I don't see where an engineer with MBA wouldn't be given a hard look as plant manager, etc. If this is your situation, bmcmil2 has really good advice. Talk to your employer and let them know your career intentions. Ask them what they feel will better your chances... an MBA, some other advanced degree or certification... if you're lucky, they may even offer to pay.

Finally tackled FIN730 exam 3. Lots of writing. No math problems. Kind of expected that on this exam but was hoping to get some as the practice problems were pretty easy.

Test 3 for Fin 730 was probably the easiest test I have ever taken since junior high. I have been somewhat disappointed in the basics of this class, most of the material learned is a repeat of undergrad and even some intro to business courses for an undergrad program. I might not be a fair assessment being I have my undergrad in Finance with an Emphasis in Financial Institutions but it is still a bit underwhelming.

I have a medical background and found this test to be harder than the first two. All of the topics ran together for me. Will have to wait and see what I made

All 3 have been about the same for me. Being an industry accountant, I really liked the subject matter of FIN 701 in regards to funding decisions and their valuations. This Financial Institution side (730) has been a drag to me. Two more weeks... 1 more test!

We can do it! Should I have taken FIN 701 first before this class? I just took this one because I was interested in the topic. I'm thinking about taking FIN 701 in the Fall AP1 if offered by Dr. Vines.
