I'm wondering about FIN 730 too. It's so nice to know what to expect and in this case we're all going in blind together. Let's hope for the best.

Hello,

I am starting my first class with ECON 705 with Shaughnessy. Any words of wisdom? I have full-time job which takes up 12hrs of my day. Also just got blessed with our 1st child. Been out of whole school thing for 15yrs...excited and more so nervous.

thx

Hi Ramgan, welcome to the TD forum and LSUS MBA program.

I was nervous too when I started the program last year. I'm now finishing up my 8th and 9th courses this week and have one to go to graduate. I earned my B.S. in Business Administration back in 1990 so I'd been away from school for many years.

This program is very doable, even on a busy schedule. I've been able to do well in the program while juggling my wife, two daughters, running my own business, and starting up another business.

Taking one class per term is the easiest way. I did double up the last two terms. With doubling up, the key is to do it with the right courses. ISDS 705 is the best class to double up on. MADM 751 and MADM 760 are also classes that can be doubled up.

You'll do fine with taking ECON 705 by itself.

Hi SoCal,

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Looks like your plate is way full and kudos on your progress. Best of luck with your business and new venture. Yea plan was to double up on classes to get done in 12 months...but later changed my mind to stick with one at a time. Thanks for your reply and tips...appreciate it.

I had planned to do the program one class at a time and made it through my first 5 courses that way. Then I got impatient and wanted to be done. So doubled up for 2 terms and now will graduate over 8 terms.

You'll see that as you get through the program you'll start to feel like you just want to get across the finish line faster.

This is a copy/paste from an email I sent to someone else taking ECON 705 next period. You may find it useful, though some of it is probably a repeat of other advice earlier in this thread.
------------------------
It's a challenging class if you don't stay on top of the work. If you already aren't, get comfortable with Excel. Watch some YouTube videos, take a quick Lynda.com course, experiment with formulas, etc. because a lot of people struggled with that at first. I work in Excel everyday, so I was fortunate in that regard, but a surprising number of people said that was a hurdle for them.

It also wouldn't hurt to at least see what linear regression in Excel looks like and maybe play with it a bit. The below video (9 min) is dry but I recommend following along on your computer as much as possible to get your feet wet. You'll be doing a lot of linear regression in the course. Shaughnessy will explain the details of what to look for, so don't think you need to be an expert going into the class, but I think it might help to have at least seen it before.

Once the class starts, try to get through the reading, video quizzes, and self assessment quiz as early in the week as possible, so you can focus on the main assignment, which can take several hours of work depending on your level of understanding. Also, he does Zoom (webcam) meetings 2 - 3 times a week. Attend those when you can or watch the recorded sessions. The live versions are better because he'll sometimes share too much on how to work the weekly assignment (in his opinion) and edit that stuff out in the recorded version.

Took ACCT exam early this morning. It wasn't bad. I had 15 minutes left on the timer when I finished. I think I got them all right but you can't even see your score after.

Just know how to do these things from his forum post and you'll be fine.
quote:

Study Guide
Apply Inventory costing methods to compute Inventory and/or COGS
Journalize basic transactions
Journalize capital stock contributions
Compute basic depreciation
Compute depreciation after changes to salvage value, asset cost, useful life, or depreciation method
Recognize and distinguish among dividend types (property, stock, cash, liquidating, etc)
Distinguish the effect on the equity portion of the balance sheet resulting from stock splits, treasury stock acquisitions and sales, and stock dividends
Compute gains/losses on disposition of assets Apply and compute trade/sales discounts
There will not be financial ratio questions like the mid-term exam (with a full balance sheet and multiple ratios to calculate). However, there will be some questions that require you to understand financial ratios, like computing a single financial ratio or calculating the maximum amount a company can borrow.

On to MADM 701

Thanks Brent. Looking to take the ACCT exam either tonight or tomorrow night. I sure wish we would at least be able to see our scores after completion.

As well as the ISDS 705 book, a pdf version of the Mastering Strategic Management 2011 book and the epub version of the Playing to Win book.

Let me know if you need it.

Hi DC,
I would really appreciate the case study, the epub PTW and the PDF of MSM.

Best of luck to you both. With it being an elective course, it may be difficult to find

Hi Brent,

Would you mind telling me how many questions related to the financial ratio?

I took the ACCT Exam today as well. It was much better than Exam 1. I finished with 10 minutes left. I think I surely got enough right to keep my A.

Now it is time for a quick break. I think I will go hunting this weekend to celebrate.

Finished ACCT as well. Night and day from exam 1 with time to double check answers and such. I feel comfortable with my answers and potential score, but even without the full review would like to have seen my grade.

Now my focus goes to the FIN exam 4.

In same boat as Astro. Happy to be done with Accounting and had time to double check and read thoroughly through answers with good time left on the clock. Complete 180 from the midterm. Onto Fin 701 studying!

Hi Guys,

For ECON 705, does he set up separate deadlines for each assignment throughout the week or it's flexible as long as we get it all done by Sunday night?

I know we should always get everything done asap but just wondering if there's some flexibility with the due dates?

Thank you so much for all the advice that you guys posted for the class so far!
