I am a life time resident of Louisiana. Work and married life has allowed me to travel to other portions of this beautiful country. For the life of me don't understand where our tax money goes to. Louisiana has income tax, some of the highest sales tax, and low property tax. For what we take in, we have crap (roads, schools, parks, etc) compared to other cities

For example, let's look at Raleigh NC compareed to Baton Rouge. Sure Raleigh has a higher property tax , but the sales tax and income tax are the same or less and they have much nicer schools and infrastructure. Not to mention their auto insurance rates are half that of Louisiana. Same goes for newer parts of Texas, they nice parks, schools, and roads.

It's a crying shame Louisiana doesnt get their act together. With governor honor code it does it look like taxes are going down and any traffic problems are going to be solved anytime soon.

Louisiana wonders why so may young people are moving away. I bet if people did more traveling at a younger age, the number would be much higher.

It goes into the pockets of the politicians and "leaders". I'm worried you didn't know this.

I know that people here run for office for a reason. And that reason is not to serve the public. Just sucks.

Count me as one of them. Born and raised in Lake Charles and received masters degree in the state. I had two job offers in New Orleans and Lake Charles but chose to interview in Dallas and got a job there. It was a no brainer taking the job in Dallas. I simply cannot meet my aspirations in Louisiana. Sure, I love my home state, but why should I have to live in a state that has no economic future beyond the petrochemical industry, backwards government, stupid taxes and spending, no value for education, and no vision for the future? A few hours to the west is a state where you can be successful on a global scale, properly educate your children in public schools, and so on. It's a shame, but I don't see the situation ever changing.

Remember that many other states may have the same or lower tax rates but along with less corruption, they have better, more robust economies with many more people earning higher salaries than LA residents. 5% of 10 isn't the same as 5% of 100.

Throw in most likely less crime and its associated costs, more productivity per worker, healthier residents (again avoiding costs associated with treatment) and so on it's no wonder why the gap is so big.

Unfortunately for LA, I love it, but it's got too many disfunctionals messing things up.

Moved from Louisiana to the KC area last year after being laid off from an oil and gas company.

Public school here are phenomenal. Public parks are well kept and abundant AF. Job market is booming and very well diversified. Yeah it gets cold and this coonass doesn't know much about snow and ice, but it's bearable.

I love Louisiana, but until my kids are out of school and we can retire this will be our home.

Well you can thank the plaintiffs bar for the auto insurance rates.

Actually it's the politicians selling out to them.

1) Corruption and theft. Both the direct kind - flat stealing the money, and the indirect kind - paying people for crappy work results. I'm looking at you, SUNO. Here, government work isn't for the betterment of the people, it's a jobs program and/or political patronage.

2) Places like Raleigh, and all of Texas, raise most of their money locally, and it stays local. Here in LA, local governments don't raise a lot of money - the real money is raised in Baton Rouge and doled out to the states, thanks to the legacy of Huey. There is an inherent inefficency in that, not to mention, more chances for corruption and theft.

3) More people in places like RDU pay more in taxes. The rates may not be higher, but there are fewer freeloaders.

As long as the people here are willing to put up with it, it won't change.

My auto insurance rates with the same coverage were cut in half when I moved to KC. Unbelievable.

Speaking strictly as a former LA resident who now pays out the arse in taxes- believe me it's better to pay very little and not get much than to pay a lot and still get very little.

Consider this- NY State income taxes don't go to
1)Roads - that's what tolls are for
2)Schools- there's a whole separate thing up here called school taxes which property owners pay in addition to property taxes...
3)Police/fire/town/village services- that's what property taxes are for.
4)NYC- yup NYC has its own income tax separate than state and federal and is not small, like 4% gross income

I honestly don't know where my state income tax dollars go.

NY is the other end of the spectrum. There is a happy medium.

OP, I don't think taxes are the issue. LA could have the same tax structure and collection process it has now, but if it had a more robust economy and the kind of citizens that come along with that type of economy, it would have batter roads, better schools, less crime, and higher quality of life.
