I have some friends that belong to a couple of megachurches in Houston. The church really is run like a large business. I've asked several of them, when you have services in an old basketball arena, how the heck do you find any community with anyone else? I was told it's all about the bible study groups... that in order to feel connected to anyone else in the megachurch, you need to join a bible study group.

I have 2 megachurches within a mile of my house. One is actually just a satellite branch where they broadcast the service from the main church a few miles away. You can imagine traffic around my house on Sunday mornings, but I digress. A close friend goes to one of them and pesters me every now and then about going. He said something similar that to get the community feel you have to get involved with the small groups that meet throughout the week. Seemed silly to me.

The other one the pastor that founded it was caught up in a sex scandal a few years ago, but people still flock to it like flies on shite. IIRC, he was banging the music director's wife or something.

Or I can't hear you over the $600k in cash that was stolen from our church.... btw, that is just 1 weeks worth of donations and doesn't included drop box or cc donations.

I thought they generally make their millions off of book sales?

They do...

I'm just pointing out how ridiculous it is that a church takes in north of $600k in a week through tithes. That is a fricking business, not a church.

btw, not to throw this thread off, which it already is.....but I think I remember in the thread about this on the Poli board that he lives in the church provided house even though he makes millions from book sales.

They do, but they don't have the book sales without having 40,000 congregants. And they don't even write their books. They hire someone with an advanced degree in theology (someone qualified) to ghostwrite, and then sometimes (Mark Driscoll) they just plagiarize good books that aren't popular.

No one buys a book from the theologically sound pastor of a church with 300 members. If you are interested in such things, there's a YouTube video of Chris Rosebrough debating one of these multi-millionaire megachurch pastors from Ohio.

That's a lie.

Houston CultureMap reported in 2010 that the Osteens moved into a home in the River Oaks area of Houston, Texas, that was valued at $10.5 million. The same article reported that the Osteens had kept a former residence valued at $2.9 million while listing a vacant lot near their former home for $1.1. million.

I wasn't claiming it as fact, just that I thought someone mentioned it in the long thread on the Poli board...

Either way, man is a piece of fricking swindling shite.

Wasn't referring to you as a liar - but that's a common trend with his supporters.

He is pig shite, and if there were a list of 10 people that are ruining America, in my opinion, he'd be on it.

How do you know that's a lie? The article you linked says nothing about who owns the $10.5M mansion. IIRC, I think I saw something on the local (Houston) news within the past few years about how the church owns the mansion.

I'll see if I can find a link or anything.

I can't remember if it was O'steen or some other pastor at a different megachurch, but the house in question was owned by a trust held by the church.

The River Oaks home is technically owned by the Covenant Trust, which means the Osteens do not qualify for a homestead exemption on it. They will pay around $260,000 in property taxes on the new home this year.
