Normally I would agree, but companies that have had accounting scandals are generally bad news. Not only do you have to worry about them being dishonest, but also what they're hiding that hasn't been uncovered. I've followed the stock market for the past 15yrs and really can't remember too many companies that have thrived following an accounting scandal.

How would y'all advise a stock market noob to go about getting into the O&G market? There is no way it stays down, and it seems like a really good investment, especially if it drops for a while longer. Obviously it's impossible to guess the bottom, or when the swing back up will happen, but how should I go about getting into it in general? What companies should I look at.....etc...?

I'm in this same boat. I have no idea what to look at.

I'm interested as well. Anyone have some good options to buy on the way down?

I'm buying some BP, but I'm holding long term, 5 years or so.

I made a post earlier regarding USO (oil ETF). I think buying some calls a year out on oil ETF's would be a good play. I would like some input from someone who knows a bit more though.

CXO has a strong footing in the Permian and has a great blance sheet. Also they are hedged in at $85/bbl for 50% of oil prod. in 2015

Bumping...

If oil bottoms at $40-43/barrel (as I hope), there are some great recommendations in this thread. Thanks to all for your input.

Anybody betting on the Russians? The Ruble futures should be a play as well I would think.

I've only seen the three you made and the OP's which was Halliburton. Someone mentioned energy ETF's. I've looked at FSENX, but I'd rather not play Mutual Funds for the short term. What are the recommendations then?

i think its safe to say that 15 was directly correlated to the events that happen,

Kinda like the CURRENT events that are happening? This is an outlier as well. Don't fool yourself into thinking you know what the floor is.
