That's not what I said. Not even close.

I would agree it is not fair at all....... for the Employer. They don't owe you shite and you will get what $70 to $80 K for not working and you can go find work elsewhere. You should feel blessed for getting a months pay, more or less a paid year's vacation.

At that age losing a job is a big deal since a job search is often much harder, but a full year's severance is pretty sweet.
Taking a demotion might not be that great a deal since you're on the shortlist for the next round.

My company gives 1 months pay for every year of employment. At 35 years, you would be a moron not to leave in that case.

Their position is being eliminated their option is to step down to lower paid position or leave and take severance.
1 year is fair, not mind blowing but fair. How about health benefits? I know sometimes they will offer health benefits for even longer than the pay, like 1.5X or 2X

And to the poster who thinks that high stress equals high pay, you've never worked in a social services setting (like a counseling center for abused children, halfway house for the mentally ill, or homeless shelter
Having done that, I can say it's not that stressful.

Is 1 year pay severance package for 35 year employee fair?
Severance packages aren't required at all. 1 year of pay is amazing.

Is he talking about the government jobs that keep ballooning in volume and are almost impossible to get fired from in the first place? No shite there isn't severence.
Don't forget the early retirement and full pensions.

My job was eliminated and I was told Jan 29. The package ws great:
Stayed on payroll with full benefits and pay until April 1st...but didn't have to work anymore.
Then I got 2 weeks pay for every year of service. I had 13 years so I recently received a lump sum check for 6 months pay. Taxes were taken out.
Insurance ran through April. I now have COBRA with my exact same coverage for 6 months and pay to them only what I paid to my company and they cover the rest. I then have an option to continue that coverage another 12 months and pay 102% of what my company and I paid combined.
I also kept all stock options and have until next April to sell or exercise them.
It kind of sucks to be let go because I made very good money. But I haven't had to work for almost 4 months and it's been great. I'm meeting with someone next week to probably hammer out details on a new job. Because of the severance I'm not desperate and will probably still be able to delay actually starting work a couple more months (they have some changes to make when I come on and could use the extra time).

If you do take it and don't plan to retire, I recommend looking for work right away. If you just live off the lump sum for a year and then can't find a job or get less pay you haven't gained anything. If you can put this away and go right back to earning something then you have a "fair" situation in my opinion.

Yeah I love these folks that thinks the world owes them something. A friend was crying because his employer didn't offer him what he thought was a fair severance package, and from what he told me it was crazy fair. He decided to play hardball and hold out for more-well he shows up one morning and there is security with a small but empty cardboard box for him to put his personal items in. No severance, benes or kiss goodby.
Did get escorted to the door.

Correct. Many I know in DCFS are over worked and grossly underpaid. All for the good of the kids.
