Yep. Congress sees all that extra money in peoples pockets, just hang tight. New gas tax is already in the works.

Some people don't realize that while the rest of the country was in a recession the past few years high oil and gas prices kept the economy along the Gulf Coast almost uneffected.

The only people I don't feel sorry for associated with the lay offs are those women that put stickers on the back of their vehicles during the O&G boom saying "Oil Field Honey Spending Oil Field Money" or "Oil Field Trash Spending Oil Field Cash."

They can suffer.

You don't need to lecture me about economics or the will of the government to get their grubby hands on the extra cash.

The regional aspect is one we can't ignore. It is going to affect my business in the Lafayette and Morgan City areas for sure. But, lower fuel prices will help with some of my other customer bases.

That free community college is looking better and better. Unemployment benefits, food stamps.

Meanwhile, the gop leadership is focused on alternative opportunities like wind and solar.

I have worked in OG&C in design and process engineering most of my life. LNG jobs are now booming. Look to that direction.

Agreed Bush. It is the future and it should be embraced and pushed to the forefront.

I'm good now. Just pisses me off at people gloating and snickering while their neighbors are losing their jobs just so they can save $30 in gas.

Like I said, let's all pay a little more for everything so everyone can have jobs. Sound good?

Thank goodness petroleum is pretty much this smallest part of my corporation's portfolio

The others will keep us afloat until it goes back up again

Anybody know anybody that was affected? How about people working in other oilfield services and related companies? Seems like tough times for folks the O&G industry. Folks are saying cuts are turning out to be worse than the 2008 down turn.

I feel most sorry for the kids that started in a Petroleum Engineering program 4 years ago and were lined up for a high paying job when they finished in May. I have no idea how bad it will be for the new grads, but in the "busts" of the 70s and 80s, it reached the level of " I have a PE degree, would you like fries with that order?"

It does suck that people are losing jobs. I work for a company that services O&G platforms and we have received letters from 2 companies stating that they expect to see decreases in our rates so they can keep their profit margins where they need to be.

These mf'ers got some nerve. Imagine if I sent that letter to my vendors. They'd laugh in my fricking face.

These assholes feel so entitled.

This might not be as good with the $300 million cut to higher ed coming up in Louisiana thanks to losing all the O+G money...

Its a cleansing in the O&G field. Big oil buys or starves out little oil. Same thing happened in the 80's. It's cyclical.

When I graduated in '08 everyone in my class at LSU had a job before graduation. Now I'm hearing it's 50/50. Texas A&M petroleum engineering department sent out letters to applicants suggesting they rethink their future plans. It's gotten bad

Their profit margins need to go up with declining revenues, or they will be out of business if this doesn't turn around.
