How much paper cash do you keep under the mattress?

Or in a safe, etc. Not talking about checking/savings or cash equivalents in brokerage accounts. Cold hard paper cash you can throw in a duffle bag and walk out the door with right this very second.

I'm cool with just keeping a couple grand around. I figure that if the shite really hits the fan and I don't have access to a bank or credit card for a couple of weeks, I'll be needing bullets a lot more than I need cash.

Whatever is in my wallet at any given time. Usually a couple hundred bucks. Should I have cash on hand at the house?

Less than $100. If something happens to the banks and the CC systems, then we've all got way bigger problems than having cash.

I could probably scrounge up a couple hundred plus $30 in change. Cash is worthless if SHTF with society, and I don't ever intend to be in a situation where I need enough to go on the run. I guess all you really need is enough to cash to make it through a few days worth of power outage like after a hurricane.

I guess my main issue is I bank with USAA and they don't have local branches, so I'm stuck with whatever daily allowance i can get from an ATM. What if I find something on classifieds (random shotgun) I want to buy for $1800 (random number) and it's gonna go fast but I can't get more than $500 out of an ATM in a day.

we could probably scrounge up 3-4 thousand if pressed.

That's why they made Venmo.

Not under the mattress or necessarily in my primary residence but as I deal in rare coins and junk silver (pre 1965 US coins), cash is kang.
I make enough off the hobby to justify not having some amount in an interest-bearing account.
Possibly it could come in handy in an emergency ?

I generally have a few hundred, wife the same, kids each about the same. So probably about 1000 cash in the house at any time.

And...
Do you own a gun or dog or security camera and what is your address and vacation plans?

Same. I went to a local bank (not usaa) and completed a counter debit withdrawal for cash to buy my boat.

Reminds me of a story from very early in my career. I may have told it on the MT before.
Our firm had a client who was pretty successful - net worth in the upper 8 figures. We would do monthly financial statements and tax planning for his personal finances and two FLPs he had. His investments had always been fairly non-diversified - maybe 20 public traded company stock that he rarely sold, and about a dozen private investments.
Well all of a sudden we see he bought some gold coins - about 50K. Cool. Over a period of maybe 4 months, he bought about another 400K in gold coins - mainly Kugerrands.
We would meet with them quarterly and at our next quarterly meeting, we asked him, hey we noticed you are buying some gold coins - what are you thinking with that? We were thinking he would respond that he thinks the price was going to go up, or he wanted to diversify, etc.
Instead, he said, well, if the world goes to hell, and the USD collapses, I want to have gold available to me. So.. I have them in my safe box in the bank vault at the Chase building in downtown Houston.
We basically then asked him... if the world goes to hell and the USD collapses... do you think you are actually going to be able to gain access to the bank vault and get ahold of them?
He thought for a few seconds and said... maybe I need a home safe =)
