Health insurance open enrollment

30 years old, wife doesn't work, have a 13 month old and another coming in April. Income about 150k/year. Have a plan right now through employer but they only pay half of my premium and my family is on the plan as well, it is VERY expensive and not even a great plan.

I'm looking to try to get some quotes on another plan. I'm in New Orleans area. Anyone have experience with this? Do you just call insurance companies directly or anyone go through healthcare.gov?

So you would stay on work plan and put your family on this new plan?

I'd look at healthcare.gov and also call BCBS and see if they have any non-exchange policies (it seems like everyone is moving to exchange-only policies).

But my guess is what you find out there will be worse than what your company is offering. With a kid, a second kid coming, and a birth coming, you have a lot of bills on the way. An outside policy is probably going to have a high deductible to keep the cost down, which you may not want with those bills coming down the pipe.

So this is crazy. I currently pay 983$/month AFTER my employer pays half of my portion. That is for a 3000$ deductible with an additional 6000$ out of pocket max. I got a quote from Humana for 904$/month for a 1000$ family deductible plus additional 3000$ out of pocket max. The plan is actually cheaper with a total out of pocket max of 5000$ less. Agent told me once we had the baby the following year we could switch to a higher deductible for cheaper monthly premium. But switching to this one now will literally save me thousands for the birth.

I wonder if there is a difference in limitations to make it that much cheaper.

I pay roughly $600 month, employer pays $1200 month for a family plan.

$500 individual deductible
$1000 family deductible

$3000 max out of pocket.

I really can't complain. Company of roughly 4k employees.

If you decline coverage through your employer and purchase through healthcare.gov, then you will be paying 100% of the costs. So the plan through your employer may be expensive, but it is probably more affordable than what you could purchase independently.

Are there any subsidies attached to that plan? If so, you need to remove them since as Poodle said, you will be ineligible for subsidies.

If you are not subsidized, just make sure you do an apples to apples comparison on what is and is not covered.

I'll never say never, but it's hard to believe in today's post-rating world that an individual policy would be cheaper AND less deductible/max than a group policy, assuming all the same coverages and exclusions.

Read that Humana plan carefully, if it is the same one I looked at a few years ago the copays were ridiculous and the provider list was short, they sucker you in by saying a small deductible and copays , but read all the details

This is 79$ cheaper when I factor in only what I pay and exclude my employer's small contribution. Much cheaper deductible/OOPMAX, no exclusions, same limitations. It's humans platinum if anyone is interested.

Our OBGYN and delivery hospital are on it. Seems to be good copay costs and no pitfalls that I can see and I actually work in healthcare. I don't even have a primary care MD because I'm 30, healthy, and haven't been to the doctor in years. Wife is 27 and only sees OBGYN. I think we're good. Thanks everyone for the input.
