So I got notice that a credit inquiry was done this morning via Transunion. I thought I had a credit freeze on, but didn't. Logged in and put the freeze on ASAP.

So the inquiry was from FEB/Destiny. I google it and that is a credit rebuilding master card.

FEB is First Electronic Bank, serviced by Concora Credit, Inc.

So I call them to report it. The customer service line IVR asks to enter the last 4 of my social. I ignore it 3 times and then it says if I want to speak with an agent, say "agent".

So I say "agent" and the IVR says, "This is an attempt to collect a debt... any information.... blah blah blah."

I hang up.

Next up: Find someone to make sure credit isn't issued to 'me'. Then determine if these guy are a bank or collection agency.

Had this happen last year. Got an email that my credit score had been negatively impacted by two new hard credit inquiries. Looked into it and sure enough my information was being used to try and open lines of credit. Thankfully they didn't get far in the process and I caught it before any damage was done. Was still a pain in the arse to report and freeze with all three credit bureaus.

Well, saving grace, potentially, is this is the worst time they could have tried... my score bounces throughout the year from like 590 - 740, all strictly based on my current credit usage. My percentage right now is about 70%, lol, jokes on them hopefully.

Why not stay on the line to figure out what is going on?

There is another thing getting popular now where there are services that try to get a persons name just put on your credit report as an authorized user. I they don't actually make any accounts they just try to get their own credit score bumped with an association to you.

I thought it was sending me to the wrong department. I wanted a support rep not someone in collections.

Ya - it's ridiculous.

Under 10% CCU - I'm 720+
Up to 33% CCU - generally 660-690.
Over 50% CCU - 620 and below.

This is where you should be all the time.

Request credit limit increases every 6 months (takes a couple of minutes on the app/possibly phone call and not a hard inquiry) and/or open extra credit cards to get your credit limit up to an amount that you only need to use 10% or less.

Only do this if you are paying the balance off in full each month. If you carry a balance some months, increased access to credit could easily lead to more serious debt issues than a fluctuating credit score.

All 3 bureaus should be frozen at all times, with a temp unfreeze if needing to buy something. Way too much fraud to risk it. It takes a minute to freeze and unfreeze

I agree. I did this four or five years ago, and it's very easy to remove a bureau for a short period of time if you ever have the need to run your credit.

Ya got the freezes updated.

For my ccu, I’m bootstrapping a small business.

Some months are better than others. It’s stressful right now.

Just make sure you remember your PIN that you created, if that still exists with the way the credit bureaus do it today.

I have mine saved to my password manager to recall them easily if I ever need to.

The link the other poster provided is good. You'll need to create an account with each of the three credit bureaus if you haven't already. Once that is done you should be able to navigate to where you can freeze the account. One of them is a little tricky to find where it is on the site the best I remember.

Anyway, once you find where to do it on each site I suggest bookmarking that particular page. That way when you need to unfreeze for a credit check it's easy to go back to it quickly and schedule a thaw (unfreeze for a period of time). There are also apps for the credit bureaus that may allow you to do it on them now, not sure. I have enough apps already, lol.
