i've heard make sure you get it covered with your insurance.
Separate insurance from your homeowner's insurance is better, we have Jewelers Mutual and been happy. Had a claim and it was handled smoothly with no problems...

If you're in Houston, check out Jonathan's or Ronnie Hoffman, broker prices, but they will make your ring in house. First step is to check out diamond guides online at places like Blue Nile, or any major diamond retailer. Next step, find something you like and that you think she'll like at one of these retail stores - this is the hardest step. After you find your design, head to a broker/jeweler and show him what you have in mind. He'll ask for you budget and then show you what he can do in terms of stones and setting.
I bought my fiance's a couple months ago - it appraised at about 30% higher than I paid, and is marked at 250% what I paid in the big retail shite stores i.e. Zadok, Robbins Bros. If you take anything out of this, DO NOT BUY YOUR RING RETAIL (unless it's Tiffany's or something).

I think the wholesale angle is being overplayed in here.
LINK /
A real wholesaler typically doesn't provide wholesale prices to the public. Yes, common sense dictates that no overhead results in lower prices. But there could be other options. Some larger retailers cut their own diamonds, then send them out for certification. (Yes, I bought retail.)

Depends where you are. There are entire buildings and districts of town devoted to jewelry in Houston. I guess my main point is even if you have buy retail, don't pay retail.

I went with the same people. My jeweler told me to just get a rider with my renters policy, but i didnt like the idea of that, i wanted something specific to the ring and something that covered damn near any claim we could possibly make, be it theft, damage, or just plain losing it

My only advice is do not listen to anyone who says you can get bigger for less cut and color quality and no will notice the lack of quality. That is B.S.
I could tell the difference between a lower quality diamond and higher one. I ended up just paying more for the size and quality I wanted. It is something she is going to wear a long time so the price per use isn't going to be very high.

There is a Diamonds Direct store in Austin too.

Just wanted to add: I got a 1.2 carat cushion cut with a 14K white gold band with another 1.3 carats of diamonds in the band. Has caused jealous comments from other engaged girls with more expensive rings.
Did you buy all of this from Diamonds Direct? I like the suggestion considering Birmingham is more in my area rather than Houston or Austin. How much time did you spend researching going with Diamonds Direct?

I've been meaning to start this thread since Monday, but with the way work has been going I did not get around to it until today. It wasn't meant to be a slight at the other poster.

Rick,
Like others have said, do your homework first. Google and YouTube diamonds. It sounds stupid but it helps. There is way more to it than I ever thought! You have the cut, the color, the clarity, the weight, and the thichness (if its easily mountable or not) which all play some factor. And thats just the diamond. Then you have the setting which has its own size, style, and shape. Hopefully your girl has given you idea or hints as to what she likes because the shape of the diamond and the setting style she prefers is the starting point for it all. Again, do your homework first. Wholesale is the way to go for price, but research on places like Blue Nile to make sure you are getting a fair price. Oh and good luck with it! Haha bought my fiancé's ring 4 months ago. It hurt my wallet and head dealing with it but I ended up going through Boudreaux's in BR and it all came out great.

Spent 1800 and bought her the ring she wanted. It was from an estate collection. It's from the 1920's and is pretty cool

That's pretty cool, do you have a picture of it? If you're not comfortable posting one no big deal but estate rings can be legit.

Take a look at this video and the different comparisons of the different cushion stones...
