BP to slash more jobs

Bp announced this morning they are cutting 4K more jobs. My husband worked as an engineer for them for 10 years, but is currently out of the oil business due to market conditions and it looks like he will be for some time. Thankfully, he was able to find gainful employment quickly in a different industry. An old coworker just contacted him because he was put on "plan". The sad thing is this guy was offered a severance package last year, but declined it because he thought he was safe. Husband basically told him he was a fool...
Let's see how long it takes the rest of the majors to make similar announcements...

Out of curiousity, what degrees does your husband have. I currently have BS in Physics from LaTech and am almost finished with my MS in Electrical Engineering from Southern. I was considering trying to get into Oil and Gas as a low level analyst and hopefully work my way up.
I assume from all the negative press that this is a bad idea. Is there anyway a newcomer can get into O and G

Didn't take the package? How stupid. If they are approaching you with a package the writing is on the wall.

What does an analyst do, in your words?

He graduated from LSU in electrical engineering with a computer minor. He originally started out in the aerospace industry, then worked in the software industry before migrating to oil and gas. He's done various types of work...IT, telecom, automation/controls, and project management. He's back doing communications work.

Not sure how this works in O&G, but generally, yes, if you are offered a package, you are likely on a list.

Hence, the reason my husband told him he was a fool! Now, that he's on "plan" for whatever non-performance issue they came up with, he'll be fired and not get any type of severance other than whatever vacation time he's owed...idiot.

More accurately I should have said software developer, but sometimes the Oil and Gas Industry uses the term analyst to be more broad based on the resposibilites.
This is from an UI analyst position
A publically traded oil and gas company located downtown Houston has an direct hire opening for a UI/UX Software Developer/Analyst
Key job responsibilities include:
Design and implement intuitive, maintainable, responsive web applications
Suggest, design and implement GUI interfaces based on user feedback
Analyze and translate requirements and user needs into intuitive web application
Help maintain and improve existing applications and processes

He is obviously a very intelligent man. With experience in a variety of fields, I do not see how he would ever have trouble finding work.
Is this thread more of a warning to those who want to enter Oil and Gas? I considered other others with my education, it just that I found OG so interesting.

Ditto to the post regarding the guy not taking the buyout package. Know a guy offered by telephone company years ago. Turned it down thinking the deal would be sweetened. Showed up for work one week later, security guard and empty cardboard box waiting at his desk. Walked him to the door. Got zero.
