I know its not alot, but its what I have to work with and its not doing anything sitting in a savings account. How, where, what should i do with it. Never messed with the stock market, but Im willing to risk a little and see where it takes me.

Should i get a local investor, try my own on E-trade. i really dont have a clue.

TIA

Is this 5k all the "savings" you have, because that is what it sounds like.

Good advice. You can open a Vanguard account on-line and they'll debit the funds directly from your bank account. You can handle the entire transaction in ten minutes.

If I were you, and if anyway you could do 6k vs 5k, I'd do 3k each in vtsmx and vdgix.

What are the differences between this and a roth? Can I get whatever I put in these accounts whenever I want to similar to a roth or is there a holding period until I can access this?

I am in a position where I am maxing roth, matching 401k from work and have a comfortable amount in my savings and thinking this is the kind of fund I will probably invest in with any extra money I have now.

A roth is just tax treatment of an account. You can hold the same type of investments in a roth, traditional, custodial, single/joint, etc

Wouldn't he be better off cranking as much as possible into one fund to get those sweet sweet Admiral shares as soon as possible?
