Best sales jobs?

I figured this is the best board for this topic but in your eyes, which sales jobs do you consider the best in regards to pay, enjoyment, moving up?
I have friends that do insurance/financial services and even though they say they do well, it seems like a grind.

I would say, depending on your personality type, real Estate if you're young and in a booming city. You can be your own boss, and even in smaller markets, you can make well over 200k pretty easily..... or you can completely flop because you have to be a self starter (why I said depends on personality)
But if you're motivated, and you have the personality to sell, you can sell anything, so housing and eventually commercial real estate is the most lucrative with the most flexible schedule.

Advertising gigs are really fun and most are moving to virtual offices

What about medical/pharmaceutical sales? I know these use to be lucrative but very hard to get. I read somewhere that pharma isn't what it used to be. I'm also not a hot chick so strike one there.

I was actually approached by a head hunter in regards to advertising. Still exploring that

Medical sales and pharma sales aren't even remotely similar.
You do have to have an in to get a decent medical sales job most of the time.

I got my cousin a job at same advertising place and he's 35.. he has series 7 license and such ... his exact quote was this "i always wanted to be a professional golfer and I think that would be the best job ever.. after 6 months at my new gig in advertising I'm convinced that being a golfer is the only way to have a better job than I have now."

I know a few guys in medical device sales. Maybe not well enough to get in but having a beer with them wouldn't hurt. Are device reps still making decent money ?

If you don't mind me asking, what is he doing that makes swinging the sticks the only job better?

Depending on the industry, absolutely.
I've been doing it since 2009. Ever evolving job (due to an ever evolving healthcare system) but I do enjoy it.
Definitely hard to break in though.

Spirits and wine sales is pretty sweet. And depending on how high you want to go there is ample opportunity to move up. Often times that involves relocation. Now the top rep guys have made around 85-95 in most areas. But two steps up from that and you're well over 6 figures and considering the work life balance and industry you are in, you're stealing.

Medical devices can be very lucrative if you have a good product and work for a good company. I think the golden days of the industry have passed but a near 6 figure dollar bonus isn't uncommon.

Medical device and pharma sales don't have the aura they once possessed in the mid to late 90's, but one can definitely do well. Seems like burdensome regulations are impeding industry growth. Plus I've heard it's a very cynical and cutthroat industry.

Pharma sales just seems so sleazy to me. You generally have hot girls with a bland marketing degree that are supposed to educate doctors and their staff on pharmaceuticals? Come on.
Though I have a guy friend that's in it and he has a biology degree and was accepted into medical school, so generalizations can suck sometimes. I know my uncle who is a doctor HATES talking to pharma reps.

Pharma reps are under unbelievable regulations. They basically only can try to catch docs at lunch in their clinics and generally harass them in their clinics.
Device sales include actually going into the OR for "trouble shooting" with new devices, implants, etc. It also involves sales with hospital supply chain directors, CFO's, etc. Long, complex sales cycles. I know a lot of pharma reps that have made the jump to devices successfully but a lot that did not.
Also, I don't what you guys are implying when you say "it's not what it used to be." This is true to an extent, but I would say most device jobs pay between $150k - $250k. $170k is probably the average. Back in the day, most reps operated as 1099 distributors and many made $500k+. So yeah, that's not as common anymore, but a below 6 digit device job is a terrible one or an entry level one (my first 2 years in as an associate I only made $50k a year before being promoted).

I'm assuming the lavish wining and dining they used to be able to do.

Device sales
Device sales is legit, and most device sales guys I've come across are knowledgeable and competent. I've met some pharma sales people I wouldn't take advice from on anything, much less pharmaceuticals.

The guys that I know at Stryker are so stressed out and some got laid off. Too much hassle for a healthy lifestyle in my opinion.
