I wouldn't work for Stryker. They are 100% commission and are pushed hard. It does depend on the division. Seems like the Endo division always has turnover in my area.

Where as the Stryker Power guy has been around for 15+ years.

I'm able to take a doc out to dinner and spend up to $125.

I also can pay for their flight and hotel for a course (such as cadaver training).

I just can't take them to a Thunder game, golf, etc.

The ortho guys I know work for Stryker. They do work hard but seem to have large piece of the market.

i have a friend that sells medical devices. She cleans up. I don't know her exact income but they own a nice home, her hsusband doesn't work, 2 luxury cars, and a boat (real extravagance in CO).

Although I do think they spend everything they make.

Tech sales can be incredible. I worked for a large tech company and average for a field rep was like $250k. But you could easily make north of a mil if you were good.

You have to start in inside sales though or be successful in some other sales career.

Curious: what companies fall into this category?

I need a backup plan if Bernie Sanders gets elected

I just started working for Cisco as a pre-sales engineer. Really like it so far. Base is very good and bonuses are great. Lots of day to day freedom, but also pressure to hit your numbers.

That number probably includes salaries of employees also. There are companies that spend 6-8 billion a year on R&D.

So I'm in Pharma sales. It's like anything, there are good reps and bad reps. There are areas that have been overwhelmed by poor quality reps so the reputation of the industry is poor. There are many reps that are great at what they do and are highly reuspected by the doctors. It can still be a great job but it's even harder to break into. Most of the people still doing it have been around a long time and positions don't open up very often. It is highly regulated but it should be. Most of the questionable marketing practices were eliminated 15 years ago.

That's a good point.

The guys in pharma who have survived and are still making it happen were the legit reps from the beginning.

The best sales jobs, imho, are the ones that after an honest self-audit of your abilities, sales anxieties, etc-honestly fit your core competency. Are you in your zone while you are working or are you just playing a "role" that management wants you to play. If you are doing something all day that causes you anxiety you are doing it wrong. Most sales positions are an exercise in anxiety and uncertainty. Be totally honest about your true talents and gear your career as much as possible toward them. I did not truly achieve that until I was 42 years old. Now, work feels like play, I am my own boss in every sense and I make really good money. But it only came through being completely honest with myself.

If I could go back to age 22 and fresh out of college I would target two industries-Commercial Real Estate and Insurance. I would never take a job selling a commodity, I would never use the word "quota" and I would never take a salaried job.

I know a couple that are both pharma sales. Between the two of them, I'd be willing to bet that they take home 700k - 1m anually. They live in a middle class neighborhood and don't own fancy cars or wear expensive clothing.
They're bound to have millions in the bank, or at least they should.
They're always complaining about having debt.
They shouldn't have any.

Pharma sales is a great industry but job security is really bad. My mom has worked in pharma sales for 24 years. The last 10 years in they have had layoffs. She has continued to survive the cut. I would personally stay away from that industry.

No way to live in my opinion. I'd loathe to be getting laid off yearly or having little to no job security.

I have a couple of friends that work construction equipment sales. One is great at his job, very knowledgeable, personable guy. Makes about 100k/year at 25. He makes 2-3 sales of cranes a year and that pretty much feeds him all year.

The other couldn't get a job out of college because of some legal trouble. He is neither knowledgeable nor personable. Just sits in the location he's based at and essentially sells small equipment to whoever walks in the door. Probably takes home 50-60k
