Looking to buy a car soon..where should I look for loans / preapproval?

There seem to be a lot of random internet sites that partner with cars.com, etc. or do you go through your local bank?

Appreciate the help!

Cap One does the blank check... They will approve you for an amount and mail you a check that you can take to one of their verified dealers.

Just be careful that the dealer will actually accept the check. Was helping someone buy a car a few months back and got into it with the dealer bc they said they wouldn't take the check even though they were listed on Cap Ones site.

I asked the dealer why and they said "Because it takes days to clear", so I then asked "Well do you take personal checks?" and the manager said "Yes" They were just trying to get the financing to make more money. Ended up financing through them, but called Capital One and received 2-3 followups from higher ups within Capital One wanting to know who at the dealership said no.

I'd walk and let Cap One know about it. Unless the dealer financing was a better deal.

To the OP... if you belong to a credit union, go talk to them.

I went to DOW FCU before I bought. They gave me a rate of 3%. Toyota gave me 0%.

credit unions are pretty good. Just got one at 2.8.

Now I might can negotiate that with the dealership if they can get it lower

I got pre-approved from Wells Fargo online. They over nighted me a blank check. Honda dealer didn't want to take check because he said it was too much of a hassle. I said beat Wells Fargo's rate or start hassling. He got a rate .1% less with quickness. I ended up sending the check back to Wells Fargo. I offered to pay for their over night shipping fee but they said no charge.
