Beginner Credit Card

My girlfriend is looking to get her first credit card, but has no credit history so it is making it harder to find one. She has no student loan debt and a pretty solid full time job. It doesn't have to have a high limit, just want to use it for gas and groceries to build for the future, and travel rewards are a plus but not overly important.
Thanks in advance guys.

My sister was in the same boat and got the capital one quicksilver card
It's 1.5% cash back on everything

Chase freedom was my SOs first CC when she had no credit.
If she can't get a traditional CC just get a gas card and re-apply in 6 months.

I have recommended 3 people with no previous credit history for the Discover It card and all 3 have been accepted. I can forward you the refer a friend and we both get $50 if she is accepted.

I do know the big teams chase, capital one, etc offer "college credit cards" nothing more than a $500 limit usually. Easier to get your foot in the door and once she's established herself getting a much larger credit limit will be easy to come by assuming a good credit rating.

I started via First Progress.
They ask you to put down an initial deposit, which becomes your initial credit limit. Then it's just a credit card that is backed up by your deposit.
Other than that, it's the credit card basics:
-Never buy more than you can afford.
-Always pay your entire credit card bill.
After four-six months of paying off bills, the amount of mail she gets should double or triple from credit card offers.

If she is unable to get a Chase Freedom or Discover It card, suggest a secured credit card instead. I had to go the route of a secured credit card for about a year in order to build credit history. At that point I started receiving mail from Discover, Capital One, etc... for better credit card options.

Discover IT card is pretty lenient for those with no credit.
USAA was my first card

Thanks for all the help guys. She applied for a Chase Freedom over a month ago and never heard back so just assumed she didn't get it. I will tell her y'all suggestions.
Would it help if she went into a branch to open a savings account and applied in person?

If she can get approved from a local community bank, she will most likely get a lower rate. My first attempt to apply was through mine and despite being a customer for over 5 years when I went in, I didn't have the credit and was denied.
I can email you the refer a friend link on the Discover It card if she's interested. I believe my limit started at $1000 with them and increased to around $3000. I like the card for all the reward incentives through partner retailers.

That isn't how it works. If she was denied they were required to notify her in writing with the reason for the denial.

This just raised a big red flag for me pertaining either to her truthfulness or attentiveness. I've been denied by Chase (for a Sapphire Preferred, and I got it after calling the reconsideration line, but that's neither here nor there) and they absolutely send you a letter.

Yeah the online application said if approved the would send the card in 10-14 days and if denied a letter in 30 days, and it has going on 45 or so at this point with no letter. She doesn't have a reason to lie, only thing I can think is maybe her roommate threw it away thinking it was trash. Should she call Chase help line?

Yeah she called today and they said they sent a letter denying her, guess it got thrown away. She said she applied for the Quicksilver and will try the Discover It card also.

If she is a student, she should be able to get a college card through her bank.

If her dad or granddad was in the military. I recommend a USAA card
