My take home is ~$3800/month after contribution to work 401k. From that comes an $800 monthly note, health insurance, car insurance, cell phone bill, and contribution to my own IRA.

fyi, then you aren't saving $1300/month, you are saving a lot more than that with 401k/ira.

Blows my mind that this board is all about being frugal, but when that frugality means spending a little but if time at, everyone freaks out.

If I could live with my parents for 6 months to a year, bet your arse I would.

Yep, living with my parents after school for about a year was one of the better financial decisions I made. Paid off 40k in student loans and bought a reliable used car with cash. Of course I was able to spend half my time at my girlfriend's (now wife) so it wasn't like I was stuck there all the time.

What's your rationale regarding putting money in the market over RE?

It's just not something I want to deal with or commit to. I'd rather put my money in stocks or an equity fund and leave it there for the long term, growth with compounding interest and liquidity are ideal for me.
Your assets are more sticky with RE whereas with investing in the market you can stop contributing whenever you need to. Never know when you're going to need the extra money and if you're tied up in RE investments it won't be that easy to get out of.

I also don't like the idea of dealing with broken ac/toilets/random calls about whatever other repairs, finding good renters, natural disasters, etc. It just seems like it could take up too much of my time as I probably wouldn't be able to just pay someone to deal with all the problems and all of this could get expensive really quick so while I'm in the accumulation stage of life I don't want to deal with any of that.
It certainly is a great way to invest, people wouldn't do it if it wasn't. It's just not for me right now, that will hopefully change later in life but as for now I'm not getting involved with it.

when i was like 37 or so, my mother asked my wife and I to move in with her. Not as we needed it, we were both doing quite well, but just b.c she wanted to see me more.

it was freakishly bizarre. Despite the attractiveness of the cost savings associated with living with my mother, I could only handle someone following me around for about a week. scratch that, about 2 days is enough.

Yeah, no way I could move back in with my mother. I maybe could have were my dad still living, but even that is a stretch.

I could easily move in with my wife's mom, but not while her dad was there. Love them both, but he meddles way more than she could ever dream of.

But I'm also 43 and been on my own since I was 18.
