Accepted a job but now realize I really do not want it.

Has anyone ever accepted a job but then realized you really did not want it? I know I know I should be blessed for the opportunity.
I have a good job at a startup right now but I got an opportunity to work at a larger company which has stability etc. I accepted the position at this larger company. I start in a few weeks but after having more time to think about it, I really don't want to change jobs.
Anyone ever in this situation? How did you handle it?
My only real concern is burning bridges in the tech community as I am close to forty.

Honesty is always the best policy in this case and yes you will burn some bridges-- but it is your life and your life does not belong to a company- Do the right thing ASAP
Make sure you are very secure in your current job before you do anything. And be assured this may get back to your boss so make sure you have your talk track straight for why you were even looking for a job in the beginning

Don't overthink it.
I don't think you are going to burn any bridges by being honest. You haven't even started, I don't see any employer caring too much.

Maybe you're just nervous/anxious about change? Might not be as bad as you have built it up in your mind, especially if it is more stability.
Is it a position considered a promotion and more pay?

Do you not want to work for the new company, or do you not want to leave your current job? Why were you looking in the first place?

Did you notify your current employer that you have accepted another position?
Why did you go seeking another position in the first place? What is going to change tomorrow with your current company that is different from today?

From an HR perspective, this isn't all that uncommon. You've been asked some good questions in the responses, though, and should make sure you have thought through them.

Not that big of a deal. Lots of people accept a position and then get countered by their current company and end up staying.

I've done it, and I'm certain that the bridge is burned between me and the prospect company, but my current employer took me back and are cool with it. You don't want to burn bridges, but sometimes you have to. They're a company and they will make it by somehow. You gotta do what's best for you.
