A/C in car broken, how much will this affect trade-in value?

Wife's '08 Nissan Altima 2.5 S with about 96000 miles on it. A/C broke and I was quoted $1100 to fix it.

KBB is saying $5270 for good condition and $4909 for fair condition. How much will I lose due to the broken A/C?

Ha, I do plan on waiting another couple months for the 2016 F150s to come out so I can get a deal on a 2015 (wife is taking my 4Runner and I get the new toy ). And it blows, just not cold.

They might not catch it. I would probably tell them, it shouldn't drop the value by too much. Of course an AC is less valuable in Chicago than LA.

Didn't even realize I could do this. I've been driving around with no A/C for about a month. Just watched a couple YouTube videos and will go pick up a can after work.

Are you sure you need to be driving a truck?

Realistically if the car is in very good condition with or without it working, they are only going to value the trade at around 3500$ if you were to do the deal this week. They may try to show you $5000, but they won't invest that much in your trade most likely. The best thing to do is don't mention the a/c being broke. They may not notice, or may not even care. But if they know you know it's a 1100$ repair, they'll try to get it knocked off that 3500 and value it at 2500 on the contract

The good thing is the weather is about to turn cooler where the next buyer is not going to care and may not notice until spring. But that's their problem. I make a living buying stuff b/c the a/c goes out in summer and selling it when it's colder IF, it's more than a minor repair.

$1100 to fix it

That's what you were quoted, it isn't going to cost them $1100 to fix it. $1100 sounds like they have to replace the AC condenser which is about a $300 part but can be tricky to change on some vehicles so your $1100 is mostly inflated shop labor charges.

I don't think they even noticed in my truck and it was the middle of the summer. Cost 1500 to fix for me, but I found the compressor online for 200. They can do that repair for even less than that I'm sure.

Wait until fall/winter...go on a really busy day. When I appraise cars when its super busy, im scanning the VIN...checking mileage, and looking for major issues. If its winter time, I wont even bother turning on the AC...but now that I think about all this, I may have to start looking for it.

All jokes aside...it shouldnt change your trade in value that much. It will be a wholesale unit anyway.

In the old days we would just remove the fan belt powering the compressor and say "I haven't had a chance to replace the belt."

Doesn't work now with serpentine belts.

I just couldn't live with myself for doing this - I'd have to disclose this. my son was recently on the opposite end of a similar situation so I can relate to this.
