My account is doing really well so far this year. My question is how can this be when the economy is in the toilet? Is it all smoke and mirrors and will it crash and burn soon?

This is true to a certain extent, but so many things drive the equities market that aren't tied to the US consumer at all. Low interest rates, demand from abroad, low energy (and other commodities) costs can all lift stocks without US consumer spending.

Unemployment is trending down, home prices are trending up and people are making more money, how is the economy in the toilet?
