You should say you want to go make mistakes somewhere else and move to another job. When the time is right move back to run the family business.

This, exactly. My wife and I are building a new home in a little slice of paradise and once it is finished, we start our "staged retirement." We will scale back to part-time in our late 50's and will hit full retirement by early 60's. We will see a reduced standard of living, but vastly increased quality of life. Looking forward to much more gardening, fishing, hiking, camping, kayaking, etc.

Wow! I can't imagine, but I know there are people who do it and love it

I don't know if I could go that extreme, but I have debated finding a role that is predominately travel related for the next few years. I'm still somewhat young, but would like to start a family in the next 2-3yrs. I figure its now or never

thats why i dont work for anyone but myself. I control my life not some bullshite company. i have any freedom i want like seeing my son play baseball and go to his practices. with a regular job you will miss out on those little things.
anyone can support them selves if they aren't a complete idiot. and most can make 4grand a month with not alot of effort. i think people try to hard to have a steady life but end up just being sheeple.

Hardest thing for me is just taking that step... Not a big fan of the unknown and lack of security. I want to go it alone and am slowly working towards that point, but its tough.
Yes, I know at anytime my boss could pull the trigger and I'm out .... This is prob a shitty way at looking at things, but ever day I get through at work I think "Hey, at least that another X amount of dollars and I can survive for X more time"... Even though I may be miserable, it is some security.

I have struggled with this. I have a great job right now. Very good pay and lots of free time. So, what's not to like?
It is arse-kissing customers, just plain boring and NOT CHALLENGING.
When I was younger, I started in maintenance for the Air Force. What I found, while making next to nothing, was that I was satisfied every single day I worked on the Jet. I felt I had a real purpose to someone. Since I have gotten out, I have lost that. It came from the mission, the people, and most importantly, serving my country.
I love working with my hands and fixing things. I have seriously debated starting my own gig on the side just to see where it takes off. If I could pay the bills restoring old cars I would.... Gonna try at least.

I've been doing this for almost 2 years now after working in an office everyday for 5 years. Its definitely a trade off, I enjoy the work more now but I hate being in a hotel 3-5 nights a week. In my previous office job, every hour of the day I was counting down, waiting for the day to be over.

OTOH, I know people who are perfectly willing to work till they die. They enjoy going to the job and they don't have any hobbies to fill their time.
