i buy it in short-yardage or goal-to-go situations where everyone in the fricking stadium knows where the play is going.

on first and ten from your own 20, and you want to run power, then run power in the conventional way, hand the fricking ball off and let the runner read the play

Sounds like you should be coaching.

I don't mind the play but I wish they wouldn't run it on the first play of the game.

EVERYBODY knows it's coming so we end up with a 2nd & long.

That will pretty much be our official play on 1st down all season so it should not come as a surprise to anyone.

EVERYBODY

LSU has run the ball on the first play of the season every year since Saban got to LSU. Why this still surprises some people, I do not know.

Also, people bitching about the run call are the same one's I saw in other threads talking about giving Fournette 25-30 touches a game. You have to run the ball for him to rush the football, fellas!

Moderate disappointment because it only gained a yard.

Les Miles is an idiot was mine. Heres to another average campaign while others in the SEC West get better.

3rd and Chavis was not present

As I mentioned earlier, Fournette scored from 89 yards out on it in the bowl game. You guys have short memories (not you, GI)

back gets the ball sooner than a handoff and has more time to read blocks and cut...there I just defended it

As already stated, the defense sees the ball quicker as there is no longer a threat of the play action pass. Also, I don't buy the running back sees the hole quicker argument. On a handoff, the running back has his eyes on the hole as the qb will stick the ball in his gut. On the toss dive, the running back better be watching the ball all the way to his hands. Therefore, I don't believe that the running back "sees the hole quicker" on the toss dive.

As someone who played and coached the rb position I can tell you there are multiple purposes to run this play.
The formation this play is usually run out of and the actions keyed on by the defenders create a single level of defenders when they all crash towards the ball. All it takes is a missed tackle or outside read to break through for a long gain. (See J Hill highlights) This play also sets up a huge play action opportunity to tight ends once defenses key in and begin to cheat in on it. Not to mention wears down defenses physically and mentally and rarely this play goes for 0 or negative yards which makes it a very good initial play of a set.

The upside is it holds the linebackers. It is why Ridley could score against Tennessee at the end of the game so easily. It allows you to use your wham blocking, but not create fierce central flow on the defense because they have to stay at home on the toss.

Also, it allows you to not block the back side because the quarterback "shows" to slow him.

Finally, it is a play that suits the cutback runners we've had. Ridley, Scott, Magee, Hill, and Fournette all were/are great fits for that type of play.

Predictability is not a problem if the defense can't stop you. Unfortunately we run this play to open every game and it doesn't often work well.

We could shock the world and throw a pass to a TE to open the game.

Jeremy Hill was awesome about busting out for big gains on that play. Stevan Ridley was too, but he always seemed to get chased down before making it to the endzone. Hopefully LF7 can have the same success on that play, but I don't really remember too much of that occurring last year.

in other words, same as an off-tackle handoff.

The play call is fine, but the execution of the line letting 2 guys meet him at the line was pathetic. No play works when you don't block correctly.
