How can you forget this gem of a call?

quote:

TUSCALOOSA -- Those poor Southeastern Conference football officials. Every week it seems their lives get worse.
Take the Alabama-LSU game. When it came time to make a key call, they seemed hesitant to make a call at all.

Alabama had scored to take a 21-15 lead in the fourth quarter. On its next possession, quarterback Greg McElroy threw a pass to Julio Jones along the right sideline. Patrick Peterson stepped in front and intercepted it and then went out of bounds. Or so it appeared.

The referees waved their hands in the air, and then an eternity seemed to pass as a capacity crowd waited for a call. Finally, referee Tom Ritter spoke.

"The ruling on the field is ..." he said.

Yes? Yes? Yes?

"The prior play is under review."

But what was the call that was being reviewed?

In a minute, he announced the call.

"After further review, the ruling on the field stands," he said. "Incomplete pass."

So Peterson was ruled out of bounds when he caught the ball. Apparently.

LSU wasn't happy with the call at all, perhaps understandably. It has become a familiar routine in SEC games.

I know this is a German thread.

They were guiding Bama through that season to ensure a big money undefeated Bama/Florida SECCG and a guaranteed spot in the BCS game by the winner. It was a pretty obvious business move to me. It happened all season for both teams. Not just against LSU.

If you watch the replay, the refs made no out of bounds motion. They just called it incomplete. That could have meant that JJ touched the ball first while being out of bounds.

Six years later and that crap is still going on.

Miles needs to get it in his head to put the gas pedal down and don't let off...

If a game is a one-score game, shenanigans ensue.

Other fun things about that review, the booth lost the feed for must of the review period and the equipment for review was standard def and small so the replay official claims he couldn't tell anything from all of the definitive shots.

How many times are you guys going to lie about this? Jones does not touch the ball out of play, once his leg comes down out of bounds, Jones is no longer even in the play. Bama fans need a new narrative on this play. Anyone with a brain can watch the video and see that that didn't happen.

Also, if he was the first person to touch it out of bounds, which he would have had to have been to make a difference, isn't that illegal touching?

If the call was what Bama fans say it was now, a bean bag or hat would have been thrown. Notice that none of those procedures were followed in this case.

It is only illegal touching if he comes back in and touches it first. But you are probably right, it is a conspiracy. That makes more sense.

And they wouldn't have to throw a bean bag or hat because he never returned to the field of play.

You're right, it makes more sense to continue to say something that didn't happen did happen and to speculate that the thing that clearly didn't happen was the call.

Let's just face the facts. The SEC has the worst, most corrupt officiating of any of the Power Five conferences. At times it just looks incompetent and other times down right bias. We constantly have officials involved/calling games with ties to one school or the other and the SEC office itself has employees in decision making roles who have obvious ties to certain schools or a school. Until the SEC offices are moved to an actual real city with the ability to attract talent and employees from a wide variety of schools and backgrounds it will continue. I dare say that the resumes for employment in a city like Atlanta will be much more academically varied with less good ole boy hiring practices than what goes on in Birmingham.

I think PP was out of bounds when he made the interception. It is more than obvious from a photo I have seen of the moment he caught the ball. You guys just need to fix that crooked spot on that sideline.
Anyone have that photo?

NO!!! The horrible non call should be discussed 100 years from now. The disgruntlement will never end. Expose the evil empire and the Bama mafia.

That's false, the manual of procedure says the bean bag or hat shall be used to mark the spot where an eligible player leaves the field of play, voluntarily or involuntarily, without regard to whether or not he re-establishes himself in bounds.
