It's funny - people here are so entrenched in "everything LSU" that they lack perspective on a larger scale.

It could be the fact that most people in Louisiana was NO for "Major bowls". Additionally, LSU Sold out ALL of its allotted tickets in years past for larger bowls from what I recall.
It also has to do with WHO they played. tOSU for example was rapped again by the SEC. I wonder what the viewing of the NC game against UF for tOSU?

ND in the Sugar was a bad game since Miami sucked arse as well as the Miami game.
Got to look at the whole picture.

IMO, the media hype for USC makes them more appealing. You no, threepeat? Craig James, during the conference realignment talks, prior to the season, stated they had been instructed to hype USC the last few years.

The study goes back to 1998 and I'm sure the first few years (2000 - 2003) we had lower ratings. I would like to see the ratings from 2003 to present because I've noticed many more people here follow LSU than used to be.

If LSU had less viewership in its 4 major bowls but Notre Dame had better than average, how was the viewership of the 2007 Sugar Bowl between LSU & Notre Dame.

Some people can't stop pimping USCw. I bet LSU gets a better TV rating this year and the next year. USCw is going the wrong way not LSU. Zero rating for the next two years will have USCw at the bottom of that list. Oh the USCw pimps will give not average the zero into the averages.

Thanks for the link- very interesting. Yes, count me as surprised by LSU's viewership stats. I'm curious, where is Ohio State? My guess is that they would be very positive since they have a national fan base.

Only one team out of those 10 with two BCS National Titles. Who cares if no one wants to watch.

I don't think it will affect thier percentage one bit. Kind of like a batting average...You don't go to the plate your percent stays the same.

But that ratings info is some wierd wild stuff...LSU is so damn exciting to watch (although usually they run away with Bowl games) I would think football fans would want to tune in to see what the "Mad Hatter" does next...

Yeah, it is kind of interesting that we don't attract a large TV following. I know that a lot of people dislike LSU and all, but I think this "anomaly" has been explained adequately. LSU has a small market compared to the other schools like USC. A number of the bowls were played in NOLA where LSU fans congregated in nearby bars to enjoy the game in the same city as the game if they couldn't get tickets. And LSU's opponents have largely been lackluster. I know that we played Ohio State, Notre Dame and Miami recently, but they were highly overrated in those seasons. I don't know of many people who really liked any of those teams to beat LSU those years. Anyway, I think it's largely the small market thing, but I am a little surprised that with LSU's recent record of success, they aren't more well followed nationally. If for no other reason than to see what the hell Les will do next.

No, it should not. Ask just about anyone in the nation about LSU. They can tell you the coach's first and last name, the names of the QBs and best defensive player, the outcome of several matchups between LSU and SEC foes, and how they believe the team managed a 10-2 regular season record.

Few, other than a dedicated fan base, can tell you shite about the teams the WSJ considers top draws. The article and premise are misleading.

LSU has tremendous name and football program recognition. There will be an enormous audience for the Cotton Bowl this year, not because the game matters in the grand BCS scheme of things, but because the teams are talented, intense and not utterly predictable.

I'm sure that a lot of people (like me) tuned in to see USC, ND, Miami (several yrs ago) to cheer against them. I doubt many outside the Southeast hate LSU enough to do that.

thats interesting since we do so well with ratings in the regular season games....it might have to do something with the matchups.

2007- everyone knew we'd blow out Notre dame
2008- ditto but ohio state this time
2009- everyone though georgia tech would kill us...fail
2010- 4 other bowl games are going on at the same time as the cap one bowl

USC doesnt really have a big following (hell they cant even sell out their stadium in the 2nd largest city in the US), but theyve played in the rose bowl many of these years. The rose bowl gets pumped up by the media like no other game and is on a day most people arent working on and it has no other games on at the same time as it.

Lot of dynamics come into play. Part of it has to do with the bowl games they are playing in vs the expectations of the fan base. Also, some teams have national fan bases and draw from a larger demographic group.

We have played against a 10-3 ND, 9-3 Miami, 11-2 Texas, 12-2 OU, 10-2 Iowa, 11-2 Penn St, 10-2 Illinois, 9-4 Georgia Tech and 11-2 Ohio St in that time span and no one watched? Wow. I watched them all. Good enough for me.

Two National Titles and a couple SEC titles as well. We have taken down some of the Nations elite when the media said we had no shot. Guess the rest of the country missed out. Too bad.

Pretty interesting stat, wouldn't have thought this.

Note that the stat is "Since 1998". Some poor years for LSU in that database. Cut it off at 2003 and I bet it looks different.

Here is a better article with more statistics - LINK

LSU is still at the bottom. I'm sure market share has a lot to do with it. However, ole miss is pretty high on the list and they have a "lower" market share than us. Not sure how to explain that? There are some other schools from smaller population states that are higher on this list. Interesting.
