Or has actually obtained an education. Go to any history class at LSU and ask them if the war was about slavery or not. Let me know what they say. Start with Dr. Royster or Dr. Foster.
Actually, I've sat through Dr. Royster's and Dr. Foster's interpretations. Frankly, I'd rather take "Honest Abe's" interpretation instead.
"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views..."
Abraham Lincoln Letter to Horace Greeley (22 August 1862)
You fail.

LSU knows something about A&M schools. Although from reading the last few days, a lot of the younger posters don't.
Yep, funny how it is all but forgotten that the name was LSUA&M (and may still be technically), but the A&M part was dropped long ago in favor of simply "LSU" though it is still an "A&M" school. (Maybe I am dating myself, but my diploma reads "Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College" - do they still?). Also many don't seem to know that LSU was also a military school though LSU didn't hang on to that part of its history to the same extent as A&M has.
Edit: great original question and thanks guys for the great responses full of historical perspective.

LSU's whole name: Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College.
One of the primary causes of the civil war was taxation without representation. the feds took lots of taxes from the south and built the erie canal, highways and bridges in the north. the times were very inequitable towards the agriculturally centered south.
slavery became the focal point of the war when Lincoln freed the slaves to destroy the labor strength of the south.
I hate the slavery that was being used in the south. there are many union sympathizer parishes in la (union, lincoln, grant) where the poor white farmers did not want to fight for the plantation owners. they were also not haters of blacks.

I don't know about diplomas, but transcripts still have the full name on them
It's kind of funny to me since A&M in Texas A&M no longer officially stands for anything. And we still are the Aggies and do yells and stuff about farmers.

True, but the Tiger wasn't applied to the State as a whole until the War.
It's kind of a question of which came first, the chicken or the egg?
Meaning, that people didn't just start calling Louisiana troops "Tigers" just because the name popped into their head out of the blue.
Louisiana troops already had the Tiger logo. And during the Civil War, people noticed they fought like Tigers, too.
Thus the name.

Decal on my truck reads:
LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY
A&M
Put it on there to spread awareness, bc the majority of current students don't even know it.
