I've been in the Army for many years. My first unit is the Washington Artillery of New Orleans and our unit crest is the one featuring the Tiger with the motto, "Try Us." I'm very proud of my service in the Washington Artillery.

Thank you for your service!

The Washington Artillery had a tiger as it's mascot long before the Civil War.

True, but the Tiger wasn't applied to the State as a whole until the War.

I read here often, and never post, but anyone who thinks the War between the states was primarily fought over slavery is simply a devotee of political correctness, nothing else.

Or has actually obtained an education. Go to any history class at LSU and ask them if the war was about slavery or not. Let me know what they say. Start with Dr. Royster or Dr. Foster.

Or educated people with PhDs in history. Get over yourself. Pull the scales form your eyes, question the lies you've been brainwashed with, and EDUCATE yourself.

The Civil War was fundamentally about slavery. What "right" did the South secede to preserve?

Thanks for proofing my typos. You might have a career as a copyeditor. Not an author, though.

To the poster that asked what an Aggie is...it's basically a farmer. A&M is a land grant school founded under the Morrill Act just like most schools in the US that currently call themselves "state". For example, it wasn't that long ago that OK state was Oklahoma A&M, referring to themselves as Aggies.

To pdxlsufan,

If you're from the south you need to try a restaurant called EAT Oyster Bar in NoPo. It's outstanding.

Maybe you need to go back and double check with Gaines. I had 4 history classes with Gaines Foster and from what I recall (it was 10 years ago) he espoused the idea that Slavery served as a rallying cry or convenient excuse for the North to usurp the rights of the states. The Missouri compromise really began to bring these issues to the fore and made slavery the central issue. The foundation issue was whether or not states had the right to determine their own laws and status irrespective of federal dictates. Slavery was the straw that broke the camel's back not the entire load.

Freedom of association. The union was voluntary after all...

LSU knows something about A&M schools. Although from reading the last few days, a lot of the younger posters don't.

Vast oversimplification.

It was the war for Southern Independence.

That's how Lincoln saw it, which is why he refused to recognize the CSA as a new country. Until they defeated the North, they didn't earn their independence. As far as Lincoln was concerned, the only way a state could secede from the Union was to win independence the way the colonists had.

The slavery issue was settled once and for all by a Constitutional amendment. But you can't force people to love their neighbors, which is why it took another 100 years for people of color to win the right to vote, use the same facilities as whites, etc. And as Randy Newman sang about, blacks were treated just as poorly in many Northern cities. Here in Oregon, the Klan was rampant in the 1920s and blacks were forbidden to own homes in Portland except in certain neighborhoods. The South is far from alone in bearing the shame of the past.

I'm not proud of the way America treated people of color for centuries. But the Civil War was but a very small part of America's (and the whole world for that matter) long struggle with slavery and more akin to the American Revolution -- the difference being the South lost in its attempt at rebellion.

I was just in Gettysburg back in October and saw a house near Cemetery Hill that mentioned Louisiana's Tigers. They were famous...well known fighters, drinkers and ladies' men. The nickname is PERFECT for my alma mater.

I am glad you took the time to type that, because I would have never been able to put it so well.

States had the right to secede prior to the war between the states. The firing on Ft. Sumpter in SC started the war. Lincoln considered that fort as US property, but the Confederates believed it should be belong to the CSA since it was in a CSA state.
