I think it's a matter of intent. Might also depend on upward or downward trajectory of the ball at the time it was touched.

Also, if Beckam set up at the back of the end zone and had to jump in the air to catch(block) the FG attempt, I bet Odell would have to jump with both feet on the colored (purple) part of the end zone. If he jumped with both feet on the white portion of the back of the end zone, it would be called illegal. This is assumption but I believe it would be true since he didn't jump from the playing field.

so, it appears from the posts, that it is a penalty if her blocked the kick from going over the cross bar? Wow, interesting rule

Exactly true cajdav. If you've spent as many hours on a football field as I have as well as in the classroom you may doubt me.

The play Beckham wanted to make, though, was to block the field goal he returned for a touchdown, not to field it. He said he set up under the posts hoping to make a Kevin Garnett type of leap to swat the attempt away. Instead, he settled for catching the ball and finding a seam in the coverage.
I can't find it now, but I could swear I read it in the Advocate online (a direct quote).

I remember Justin Hunter's recruitment, that they used him on special teams to block field goals at the cross-bar. Don't know about college, but must be legal in High school..

If it is in fact illegal to block a FG at the goalposts, then that rule needs to be dropped. It would be a phenomenal athletic play to see, and the truth is that even Dikembe Mutumbo in his prime would only be able to get 0.001% of any FGs. Most of the time, the ball is 20-30 ft in the air. You'd need to fire guys out of cannons to get them.

Yes, it is legal to block it at the crossbar. But, it is ten feet high and the ball would be on a downward trajectory so it would take a great play to block it "above the rim". As I stated, a FG attempt is nothing more than a punt that can score 3 points. Makes no difference if place kick or drop kick.

Yes. If the ball were low enough or he could jump high enough, unassisted, then yes, it is a legitimate block.
