By cupcakes are you referring to teams that could never beat a big time program , say like UAB. Oh wait a minute, having a flashback.
OK how bout Furman, 2700 students, co-ed so about 1300 men. Liberal Arts School knock off another 1000 that can't do a push up. Eliminate shut-ins, homs , special needs kids, Cartman and Kenny, then add 4 professors and two dykes on bikes, you got a team. And you call this a cupcake!
Geez. Rather see us play MNBLA and beat the crap out of them.

There's too much incentive to play these cupcake games. Whether it be to secure more home games, coaches job security and/or the rationalization of competitive balance...as much as I agree with you, it will never go away.

I'd just as soon be like the old Florida St. model when Bowden was building and say we'll play anybody, anywhere, anytime and let everybody else make the excuses, the reality is...it just ain't ever gonna happen in this day and age.

And I just can't help but ask the rhetorical question: "Why not? Why can't it happen in this day and age?"
My own sense of what is happening is that it is always a lot simpler for the schedulers to schedule cupcakes like we see on the 2014 schedule because it involves less thought and effort, because they want to play us and honestly, who wants to play them? But ok, schedule a few likely wins - only pick higher in the cupcake tree - there is a lot of distance between the lower echelon of cupcakes like ULM and Sam Houston State and the UAB, Middle Tennessee type cupcake teams, etc.

You didn't see LSU play a BCS non-conference team in Tiger Stadium until 2004.

If you don't like it give up your tickets, because someone will gladly take them.

This. Let mine go in 08, now I just pony up for the games I want to go to, to easy.

No because the SEC. comm. went to bama & loves him some Saban! Bama plays 2 teams this year LSU & A&M. both will not be as good as last year. Most will not agree, but I wish every one in the SEC would have to play every body. Then we would see who had the best team. I also think fish-head is a closet GUMP!!!

2014 is literally the only easy schedule in years.... I'm okay with it. We play bama and Florida ever year. Not every year can be 2011...

I am a firm believer that if I did relinquish my tickets going into 2014, whoever buys them will also quickly get sick of spending all this money for three home cupcake games.
negative ghost rider. some company will grab the tickets. they will never let them go. in fact, the company i work for is looking for LSU tickets. if you have 4, let's make a deal. where are you tickets at?

That seems like what you should do.

Give them up and let someone who understands how college football works right now enjoy them.

Maybe you can pick up some NFL season tickets and enjoy all those exciting preseason games that are full price to watch what amounts to practice sessions.

Things might change some when we go to a four team playoff, but cupcakes have always be a part of the game and always will be a part of the game to some degree.

Are you effin nuts? Back it up with a single post that indicates that.
When I went to LSU, we tied tOSU and got our arses stomped by Miami. That's the only two big time non conference games I remember from back then. We played FSU before I went there, and then again after I left. Home and away I believe.

In the last few years, we've played Washington twice, Oregon, WVU home and home, UNC, TCU, about to play Wisconsin, the list goes on and on. Plus UF, BAMA, TAMU, UGA, USCe, and the rest of the SEC.

I think what really bugs people is that a lot of the big OOC games are neutral site. Here's the deal with that...

If LSU wasn't an elite program, if we were how we were when I went to LSU, we wouldn't get these games at all...and damn sure wouldn't get them at home. Deal with it...it's a sign that we are a top program. Nobody can possibly say we have a soft schedule, we just happen to have a soft home schedule every other year or so.

Solution, give up your tickets.

I graduated in 1990 and took over my grandmother's tickets in 1991 so I feel your pain concerning these "cupcake" games. But, lets look at the bigger picture.

Besides serving as "warm-up" games at the beginning of the season or providing our starters a "breather" during the season, one of the main reasons for "cupcake" games is because the athletic department budget is based on playing 8 home games per season (or 7 home games and a profitable neutral site game).

All "legitimate" opponents would require a "home and home" agreement before playing us in Tiger Stadium, resulting in an average of only 6 home games per season instead of 8. Personally I would rather play 6 legitimate opponents at home with no cupcakes than 4-5 legitimate opponents and 3 cupcakes. I'd even be willing to pay as much as I do now, but I don't think everyone would.

The "cupcakes" play us in Tiger Stadium without a promise of us returning to their stadium because we pay them to do so.

Think about it: Even if the stadium is only filled to 80% capacity, and we pay a "cupcake" $500,000 to play us at home, the athletic department still probably banks about 8-10 million for that game.

When it gets right down to it, it's all about the money, and it takes a shitload of it to run a program like ours.

Yes.
1. It will eventually be about TV revenues, not "student-athletes". It will be all about $$$.
2. College players will soon be paid, and then this will morph into some kind of minor-league football. It will be all about $$$. Ticket purchasers and TV contracts won't tolerate the existence of cupcake games for their semi-pro "college" teams. Look for massive conference realignments within a league of perhaps 52-62 upper tier Division I teams.
3. The "smart" colleges will opt out and have their own true amateur-student-athlete football leagues.
