Why Was LSU Ranked So High to Start the Season?

We certainly did not deserve a Top 5 ranking.
If you look at the last two seasons, LSU finished unranked in one and 20-ish in the other.
We had an unproven QB.
An offensive line that has been overrated the last two years.
What were the prognosticators basing a Top 5 projection off of? Name recognition? An RB with Heisman "potential," but never actually finished with any Heisman votes?
LF7 is an outstanding RB, no question, but he does not have a great supporting cast. He more than provides the rushing attack, has a great filler in Guice, but he has no passing game to support his efforts, and his offensive line has proven they have no answer for Bama's front 7.
When we look back at the 2016 season, it should be viewed as an underachievement, sure, but I think the fall from the Top 5 to the #22 is a little unfair to this team. This was a Top 15 team at best.

They should have achieved more than they did. Should be a 1 loss team right now, but then there's coaching.

So ESPN can do their end of the season bit.

18 returning starters, loaded with potential NFL talent, favorable schedule all add up to high expectations and rankings.

Media did not believe Les was a bad coach, we returned like 18 starters. Overall a terrible season.

pre-season polls are nothing more than media hype to get fans interested. we had a lot of seniors plus a potential Heisman candidate, so we made for a good story line. happens every year to a few teams...think about Ole miss & Tennessee this year...

We had a QB going into his JR year. He had a very average season his Soph year, but it certainly wasn't as bad as fans think.

Well, they're still considered a top 10 unit in the country even after going 7-4

This is Hindsight. Dupre was a 1st round consideration coming into the year, Dural has been our best receiver the last 2 years, Chark is a baller. And yea, LF and Guice are 2 top 5 backs in the country

No. We lost to Wisconsin by throwing an int in their territory to end the game (if Les just ran Guice we win that game). We lost to Auburn only after it was reviewed, we initially won...and both of those games we were a POORLY coached team. Took Bama to the wire, only team to do so (Ole Miss was down 3 scores with 2 minutes left, got lucky with onside kicks). Florida we got stopped on the 1 foot line to end the game.
LSU is EXTREMELY close to being 10-1 and in the playoffs, and it has been an insanely tumultuous year. This is EASILY a top 5 talent team
BTW, nowhere in there did you mention we have the 2nd best defense behind Alabama

Because we had a lot of returning starters from last season including an experienced quarterback that showed potential, voters weren't going to under rate us based on CLM being awful.
LF7 - Guice - Beckwith - Adams - White - Neal - Key - Dupre
You think many teams have that much potential big time NFL talent like that on their roster? No. All the talent in the world can't overcome poor coaching.

Wisconsin,Auburn and Florida should have been Ws if not for boneheaded plays.
We would have been a top 5 team looking into the playoffs and pulling a Bama from 2011.
Ugh!!!!

All this including Heisman front runner, Leonard Fournette (injury free), Guice as the second best in the SEC.
Most importantly, everyone was banking that QB Brandon Harris could possibly be an All-SEC Performer with another year of experience.

LSU can play with anybody in the top 10 in the final rankings this weekend. coulda woulda shoulda

They thought LSU would beat Wisconsin, Auburn and Florida. Honestly there's coaching that prevented that from happening.
LSU would be sitting 10-1 if they took care of business like they should have.
Pollsters didn't think Les would regress in game day coaching. He did.
5 was right without silly coaching.
McElroy still thinks LSU is 2nd best team in SEC.

Because no one that was ranking realized that we actually kept Les Miles as the HC to start the season. They thought he got fired last year.

We were ranked appropriately IMO.
LSU should be 11-1 right now and ranked about #4-8, regardless of coach.

We had all the pieces in place except for a properly developed QB. Last time I checked a couple of weeks ago the Vegas power rankings still had us #3 in the country behind Ala. and Ohio State. Those people know more about how to rate football teams than anyone.

do you even follow LSU football ?
as others have pointed out ...18 returning starters with a favorable schedule and the Heisman frontrunner
prior to the 2016 season, more bets were placed on LSU to win the NC than any other team
what people failed to realize is our moronic, grass-eatin' HC couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag
.

If LSU was a one loss team to Alabama by 10 they would NOT get the BAMA treatment. They would be on the outside looking in and left out of the playoff system.

18 returning starters

Based on Talent. Vegas had us favored in 10 of eleven games. If we had done that we'd be sitting at home today wondering who we would be playing in the first round of the playoff. But hey Les and Coach O are great guys
