Why is everybody so sure that Loston is a RS?

Peterson sure didn't redshirt and the accolades coming out of high school are comparable. Its not like the safeties are proven starters. My understanding is Loston is having surgery on his hand/wrist. Couldn't he gain experience in the first half of the season and with cast removed, emerge as a starter midway through the season a la Laron and Peterson?

Maybe, I think it's just one of those situations where people don't know the extent of the injury and the recovery time. Obviously if healthy I don't think Loston would sniff a RS.
There are just too many factors with the injury, production of current players at his position, etc. It might be that we get to week 6 and Loston is ready to roll and we need some help. We'll just have to wait and see.

Loston is a redshirt because he is about to have surgery where he won't be able to practice let alone play until the half way mark of the season at best.

2 ways of looking at this:
you could argue he should heal up and redshirt...the speed of the conference is immense for a true frosh to jump in midseason wet behind the ears and expect great production...save the eligibility
and the other way of looking at it is he will need some experience this season to benefit him because he very well could be the starting FS next year if CJ leaves early

I think the bone broken in his hand has a high risk of avascular necrosis if it doesn't heal properly, so it's not just a "regular fracture" that would heal in 6-8 weeks.

Oh ok, thanks for clearing that up for us non doctors Ric.

I'd let him play. He likes to hit. He tried to put his cousin in the hospital at the all star game.
I'd put Randle in as 3rd or 4rth receiver and let him go long this year too. We'll cash in this play a few times if I was Les.

I think it was his scaphoid bone, IIRC.

Tissue death due to lack of blood flow to the area.

That can be a scary injury. I hope it wasn't bad. When and how did it happen?

if this bone (called scaphoid or navicular) doesn't heal properly and dies there is a high likelyhood of having to fuse the wrist so this is not a fracture to take lightly.

I wouldn't RS Loston, Because I think Loston will be gone in 3 years. I just don't see rs Loston as an advantage if he can contribute for a couple of games.

His long-term welfare is more important than any of your reasons for not giving him a redshirt.

Could we RS Loston and then apply for a medical waiver if we needed too?
