Normally passing team struggle as the field shortens but with a running based team, how is that we are forced to kick so many FGs?

We got unlucky the first trip to the redzone.. got a first down at the eleven yard line. which makes it extremely hard to score because the field shrinks when you get down there.

Because we can't pass the ball.

Any team without balance will struggle to score

We had trouble in 2012 as well, mainly because we got far too conservative in the RZ

We can't pass the ball at midfield either. Doesn't seem to keep us from running it then.

minimal threat of a pass execution once we get inside the 35.

2012 offense was probably the most underachieving under Miles. Which says a lot

Not a threat with the pass and less field to work with

Our QB is terrible at short and intermediate throws. Coaches have passed to fullback, trick TE rollouts, and running the ball as options.

exactly. When the field shortens, they can creep up even more to shut down the run

When you get closer to the end zone, the defense can crowd the line of scrimmage more. I know, it's rocket science.

The part of the field the defense has to defend shrinks. And the fact that we can't pass shrinks it even more and we basically end up running on a 11 man box

The field gets compressed in the red zone so the defense can creep closer to the line since there's less field to defend. This makes running harder.

The failure/refusal to use the TE in the middle of the field is a big part of our struggles.
