re: Why does everyone think we should be in the spread but the LSU staff

When Les was coming up in coaching, every crappy team in America had a qb from Chicago named Vernteal who could run like the wind and broke one 60 yard run every week but couldn't throw a pass 10 yards. Those teams lost by six touchdowns every week to physically-superior, sound teams. I think his pride doesn't allow him to adapt when his self-image is wrapped up in LSU being a line-of-scrimmage badassery team.
Some people adapt on the fly, others go back to the well. Going back to the well has worked pretty well for Les, so here we go again...

Lets face it guy's the Lsu football team sucks this year.
Yeah, that's where coaching comes in. You would think that the game plan would change to play to the strength of your personnel. This staff doesn't know how to make adjustments. That has never been a strong point of Miles. He's convinced that you can just line up and will your way to victory.

Sort of mind boggling that we gash MSU and NMSU with Harris in the gun and then we go under center against AU.
Well this is a good point.
I also want to point out that when Harris is in the shotgun he is still playing with Miles' pro style offense. It's not the typical Malzahn "spread" type offense.

You know I said at the beginning of the year that this year we'll see if Miles is worth the extensions and raises he's been giving, b/c on paper this team needs some work. Can he and his staff coach up young players and put them in a position to succeed. This is a trait that coaches who are successful for long periods of time must posses. This year Miles and his staff are showing they do not posses this. They're taking thier most talented kids and forcing them into uncomfortable positions and not utilizing what made them top recruits in their class.

I bet Malzahn cringed watching Harris run the I formation knowing the things he could accomplish with that kid.

That's a huge deal. Really.
If Harris had been starting for Auburn this week, it's possible that the blowout would have been worse.
This makes my heart hurt.

Fans, analyst, x-players and other coaches are all wrong. The power I can work with 10 in the box. Miles is right.

Heard some x-players grumble here and there about our offensive philosophy, but the one that stuck out to me was Kevin Mawae saying he had to leave the State game early b/c he refused to watch LSU line up in the I from with the QB under center one more time.
This is an All-American and future HOF'er, an ambassador of LSU football who wanted to be the next OL coach by all means, and a guy who played before the spread made the complete take over it has now and he just shakes his head at our regime. Now you can call me a rantard and say I don't know shite, but that guys does.

Why does everyone think we should be in the spread but the LSU staff
Hell, screw spread. Why do you put a kid on the road at Auburn who has NEVER been an under center guy prior to getting to college and put the dude under center?
I mean, one would think making him as comfortable as possible would be the thinking?
Oh. Wait. I said "thinking" when it comes to Miles. What was I thinking.

Miles has always been last to the party when he is getting hung out to dry against a quality team. 1/9/2012 told us that. Yes we are young but coach give the team a chance.

You mean after this season or the next season? He wasn't going to take Marshall's position or that of Jeremy Johnson.

We have every player we need to run a spread. We have a qb who can excel in the read option. And a second backup. We have multiple rbs that are great in space. We have a blazing fast receiver that makes them respect the post. We have 3 more solid receivers. We literally have every single thing we need. Our line is not even suited for a power I. All signs SCREAM spread.
agreed

To me, there is a disconnect somewhere in the system.
Collegiate offenses, especially at the SEC level are definitely more complex, and you can't just expect a coach who is proficient in one type of offense to completely overhaul his entire offensive scheme.
THAT being said...
Great coaches are able to adapt their team's strategy to their teams strengths and talents. You're not always going to be able to recruit exactly the type of guys you want/need so you need to be flexible.
Good example, I was lucky enough to play for a great coach in HS. My sophomore year, we were running a pure veer option offense. My junior year, we ran a wing-T. By the time my senior year rolled around, we had a talented QB so we had started running 25-30% of our plays out of the shotgun. Our records in those seasons, respectively: 5-5, 7-4, 10-3
To me, this is the reason highly-regarded OCs and head coaches should be paid so much. They don't need to experts at every single offensive scheme, but they should at least study and know enough of them to adapt to the inevitable fluctuations in talents of their players.
Both Harris and Jennings are obviously not playing the type of game they are used to.
A good coach helps players adapt to a system. A great coach helps players adapt while also tailoring the gameplan to their current strengths and talents.
That seems to be LSU's coaching weakpoint.

I don't fault Les for running a pro style offense, it has worked throughout his tenure, but I do blame him for recruiting players that do not fit that system. If we are going to run a pro style offense, recruit players to run that offense, don't recruit dual threat QB's

I mean he wanted the kid, called him little Cam and I believe his skill set as a freshman is far beyond what Marshall's was. He probably feels bad for the kid.
