"dual threat" (more like non-passing) QBs are what we grow here in LA. Its a product of the atheletes we have and what offenses the high schools run. Most will put their best athlete at QB, let him scramble around and throw to wide open WRs. they put up good passing numbers so everyone assumes they can pass at the next level. But they get to college and have never had to read a defense or go through a progression.

If we want passing QBs (and we should with Les' style of offense) we need to recruit Texas Qbs harder. They run more pro style offenses in high schools. Also need to get bigger on the OLine to do this.

Or another option would be to run an offense that meshes with our recruting base of skill players, and smaller, faster linemen.

So we went to Georgia to get Anthony Jennings and Texas to get Russell Shepard. We took Harris over Mason Rudolph, who Cam was actually first on the scene for. I'm not buying that it has anything to do with Louisiana. Now, I do realize that Gunner and Zach Lee didn't make it to campus.

Les wants a duel threat quarterback because you can not beat the fast SEC defences with a statue playing quarterback.

I'm not sure I'm big on the scramblers who can't pass and don't scramble either formula as a plan for success in the SEC.

Probably half the DBs and WRs on the team played QB in high school. Half the baseball team as well. HS's here put their best athlete at Qb and run everything through them. as opposed to developing a legit passer. Evangel and the other Booty school up north have been the exception.

Im not sure the current numbers but last year there were 8 NFL starters from Texas, and 18 college starters. Thats more than coincidence.

Edit: im not saying you dont have to do anything to develop them, they're still going to have to progress, but the learning curve is much faster with the guys who already have a good foundation of passing in high school. The "dual' threat qbs we've gotten have not progressed at all.

I know BHarris andeven JJ passed a lot in high school, but am wondering how sophisticated the offense was. Maybe somebody can help me out here. Im guessing it was a scramble around and throw type of offense? The tools are all there but seems like he's regressed just like our other Qbs have.

Can't beat them with QBs who can't pass or read defenses for shite either.

Gotcha. When he was being recruited everyone was just talking about he was mostly a pocket passer. Thanks for the clarification on Harris.

Give me a statue in the pocket that has balls, leadership skills, is accurate, can think on the fly and plays with passion rather than a great athlete that still cant learn the damn playbook after 2 seasons and is "athletic".

Edit: Intelligent as well. I forgot intelligence.

Maybe they are just hand offs, but I see a lot of what looks like a read option where Harris just doesn't pull the ball when he should.

Next year we will see an improved Harris.

Hopefully as Danny Etling's backup.

ive been scratching my head ever since...i just dont understand...the proof is in the pudding with duel threat vs pocket passers at LSU

We have elite guy after elite guy at skilled positions on offense....why in God's name would we need a running qb?
Hey may not be our guy, but a prototype like Cole Kelly is perfect. Big, strong, cannon arm that stands in there and makes the throws when needed.
If they can run, it's should be considered a bonus, not a necessity
