Why didn't Jerry Stovall work out as LSU's coach?

with him as coach.

Jerry Stovall is an awesome guy and a great Tiger. If you've never met him, you're missing out. Really quality man.

He was a great recruiter, a great person, but didn't pan out so well in the coaching department..

Great man indeed. IMO, he was too loyal to some assistants. He should have let his O coordinator go two years earlier. His team beat The Bear, 82", I believe. Bear Byrant quoted as saying . "Worst beating I've ever been involved in." The Bear retired 37 days later.

Jerry Stovall is an LSU legend besides being a great individual.

As a small kid, I jumped out of the chair and ran yelling around the house when he returned a kick off 98 yards against Georgia Tech. If I'm not mistaken, LSU won that game something like 10-7. GT had a very good team. I'll never forget that kick off return. I don't think he was touched.

Stovall should have won the Heisman, imo.

Besides the dismal on the field performance his last year (0-6 in SEC) it was tied up with the dismissal of Dietzel as AD and the hiring of Broadhead who wanted his own hire as I recall.

Beat them 20-10 - not sure how that could be considered the, "Worst beating I've ever been involved in."

Well, you'll have to google the quote or contact bear's spirit, because that's what he said.

Strangely, wasn't Stovall considered a candidate during subsequent coaching searches? I seem to remember reading his profile next to other possibilities such as Pat Sullivan (or maybe it was earlier during the Hallman hiring?).

I was at the game. 10 yards net rushing for AL in the first half. Was a beating.

The 1982 team was a head scratcher, to say the least. Incredibly talented and could be absolutely dominant at times, yet somehow found ways to lose to Moo U and Tulane.

It wasn't a knock on you, I was just wondering why he would consider a 10-point loss one of his worst beatings.

Also lost to Tulane twice. We often won big games and lost games like that.

I sat next to him during a game about 20 years ago. It's cool that he's still such a fan, but they made the right choice to fire him.

As overused as the cliche' is...this really was a game where the game wasn't nearly as close as the score indicates. LSU's defense manhandled Bama's vaunted wishbone attack and the nation was introduced to Dalton Hillard that day.

Jerry Stovall is a wonderful Christian man. I've met him a couple of times. Absolutely class act. GREAT recruiter!

Coach Stovall was a victim of Bob Brodhead. I'm not sure why Brodhead didn't care for him but from the time Brodhead became AD he was determined to fire Stovall. I know Arnsparger was a good coach, but he won with Stovall's recruits. If Brodhead had left Stovall alone, we would not have had the Archer-Hallman years.

Bama had zero first downs in the first half.
