Justin Vincent ran over everybody in 2003.

I sometimes wonder if people really remember anything.

In 2003, the starting backfield was Joe Addai and Shy Carey. It took injuries to BOTH before the trio of freshman running backs got hardly any playing time at all, and that wasn't until the USCe game away, when both Broussard and Vincent went off. From then on, Justin was a machine.

But...2003 Saban didn't see what he had in him, which is why he was playing Shy Carey over both Vincent and Broussard. Took injuries to sideline both before 2003 happened. Otherwise, who knows...

2003 team wouldn't be able to score on the 2011 team, the defense was that solid

Not saying the 2011 team would be putting up huge numbers either for obvious reasons but I think a score of 7 - 0 or 3 - 0 is reasonable assuming a play on special teams or a FG eventually happens

The 2003 o-line was far better than the 2011 o-line.... QB play was much better... defense is a push.... special teams is a huge difference for 2003. And just the fact that the 2003 lost to FLA, they dominated some teams they should have..... they destroyed a very good UGA team in the SEC Title game and shut down an offense in the NC game that was way better than any offense the 2011 team faced, and it was in the most important game..... 2003 27 2011 17.

True

QB play was much better

It was better. I think the difference is exaggerated. Aside from against Bama, the 2011 passing game was good/average- and that was the best Bama defense ever until this year (and one of the best of the modern CFB era).

special teams is a huge difference for 2003

Not sure how you can conclude this. 2011 special teams were phenomenal. Skyler Green was a better return man but Brad Wing was a legitimate weapon.

defense is a push

I think 2011 was better, personally.

2011 played Oregon, WVU, Arkansas - all which were great offenses - all shut down.

The SEC as a whole was way better in 2011 than 2003, and LSU never faced a challenge outside of a historically great Alabama team (which it was able to beat on the road). That's before even getting into what they did OOC.

Who Wins? 2003 LSU Team vs. 2011 LSU Team?

It kind of depends on who is coaching? If it is Saban, Saban. If it is Les Miles, Saban.

2003 w/ Saban: 28
2011 w/ Miles: 10

While I think the 2011 team was more talented, the coaching of Saban and Miles' love affair with JJ puts 2003 over the top in a big way.

If Lee had trouble with bamas 2011 defense, he would have cringed against the 2003 defense... JJ would not have been any better IMO... Bottom line is I think Saban would put Mauck in a position to be good against the 2011 defense..... the 2003 offense was better than the 2011 Bama offense by far....

This won't be a popular comment but I Think 2011 Bama defense was equal to LSU 2003 Defense.

They'd play 2 out of 3 and I give '03 a slight chance simply because of Lee OR even Jefferson opposing that D. Nonetheless, Mauck would not fare well against Brockers, Logan, Montgomery, Mingo, Baker, Reid, Claiborne, Simon, etc.

Game 1 -- '03 17 '11 7
Game 2 -- '11 15 '03 13
Game 3 -- '03 7 '11 6

QB -- Advantage 2003 (Mauck might as well have been a combo of JL and JJ, but even better. He was wiser, more successful, and had c'ship game experience like none other. Sure, JJ got some in 2011 @ Atlanta, but by then, that was every other player BUT him who made their mark. JJ had a great game/career best vs. Arkansas, but it was Badger and then K Hilliard who bailed him out and set him up for a c'ship. While Muack did not play well in the c'ship game versus OU, he did enough with his legs and his mental skill set to help LSU win a c'ship. The dude lost TWO college games while a starter at LSU! )

RB -- Advantage 2011 (2003 was no slouch with JV, Broussard, and Addai "sharing a torch"; but, when K Hilliard is your 4th string back who emerges late in the year, you have to give a slight nod to '11)

WR -- Advantage 2003 (This is decided strictly by the back-ups as Michael Clayton and d Henderson were no better than Beckham and Randle...but Buster Davis and Bowe as tertiary receivers and a wildcard like Skyler Green? Give me 2003).

TE -- Advantage 2003 (Nothing spectacular on either team, but Chase Clement and co. were utility TE's versus David Jones and Eric Edwards who could both block and catch).

OL -- Advantage 2003 (and it's not close. Nobody loved Will Blackwell and PJ Lonergan more than me and Chris Faulk studded up. Meanwhile, however, Nate Livings was a fairly sturdy "weak link" on a line that was gelled BIG TIME -- Reed, Whitworth, Wilkerson, and Pederson with a decent backup like Terrell McGill -- money). The '03 Interior line may have been challenged here, but not the expertise of the two OT's. Whitworth, alone, cannot be trumped.

DL -- Advantage 2011 -- tackles only. Brockers and Logan are about as good as it got outside of Sapp/Maryland-esque. Lavalais and Wyatt/K Williams were very formidable, but imagine had 2005 Wroten played along side 2003 Lavalais -- yikes. Brockers and Logan have already established themselves as franchise-type picks, while Lavalis was a player of pure heart and toughness and medium skill. Meanwhile, K WIlliams was not as good as he would be two years later and Wyatt was a throwback to the latter Curley Hallman teams).

DE - EVEN -- This was too close to call. All starters and backups were all quality. Okay, if I had to give a slight advantage, then 2003 because of Melvin Oliver and Kirston Pittmon being huge players after Spears/Hill. Still, was Sam Montgomery the best we saw? I think so. Hill (RIP) and Spars had huge NFL careers as well. Great match, but '03.

LB - EVEN -- This is always fun to compare because no one on either team was a standout. Minter was the best of all 6 starters...but then it comes down to Cam Vaughn/J Ledoux and Eric Alexander vs. Karnell Hatcher and Ryan Baker/Lamin Barrow??? If there was ever one position BAMA trumped LSU in, this was it -- ILB's, no matter scheme.

CB - Advantage 2011 -- Mo Claiborne and Honeybadger were no better/as great as all-American C Webster...who was better than T Daniels, a great cover-corner. Then, Simon and Brooks were better than Gay and (insert name). HUGE advantage 2011. Cover-skill-wise, not a huge advantage, but just overall athleticism? No contest.

SS/FS - Advantage 2011 -- Hunt and Landry were both very good and very serviceable -- one an all-SEC frosh and the other a team cpatain whom we lost one lone game without. Still...Reid and B. Taylor? A mix of Craig Loston? Give me him over Jessie Daniels any day. Another HUGE advantage.

PK -- Advantage 2003 -- CJ/Gaudet >>>> Alleman /Hairston. IT was not a big one, either -- both sets of kickers knew their places, but CJ may have been more important than Gaudet, who usually preceded him as the regular PK.

P -- Advantage 2011 -- Donnie Jones may go down in infamy as the last "ball controller" of 2003; 2011's photo of B Wing says enough. I won't bother to look up the stats -- Brad Wing is the only punter in NCAA history up until that era to have any rock-star "bad arse" menatlity about him. DECENT advantage for 2011, as Jones was still evry stout.

KR - Advantage 2003 -- Skyler all day, baby...and Devery's return in the '03 UGA game might have been the difference in helping the fomer receive a scoring TD pass from M.M. . I like Beckham and Claiborne, but I never loved 'em here...especially since there was only 1 touchdown (that I can account for) between their returns. Skyler and Devery did not do much better (if any) scoring wise, but they were always threats for a large return.

Coaching -- Advantage 2003 -- You all know the intangibles here. YOU have a tough-nosed defensive Napoleon-syndrome D.I.Y. guy versus a master delegating grass eater and risk-taker. Both are 2 of the 4 best coaches to ever coach for the p&g. Obviously, one is much better than the other.

2011.

Would've gone down as arguably the greatest team ever had another team not been upset as a 28-point favorite.

LINK

The only team to have its title hopes ruined by another team being upset. Alabama had the complete psychological advantage in the rematch.

If the kick had been lower, it would have bounced in.

2011 wins easily. Best team we have had.

Better question is '03 vs '06 vs '07

You people are idiots. You let 21-0 blind you.

The 2011 team wrecked shop, AND beat Saban at BAMA!

The 2003 team got embarrassed 19-7 by a RON frickING ZOOK coached team.
