Majority of posters here have no clue.
I'm 35 and I don't. Before my time.

I'd say Ensminger just by going by the eye test. I guess I liked the way he played the position/carried himself more than Woodley.

Woodley was the starting QB in a SuperBowl, I belive Ensminger got cut by the Saints.

I'd bet the OP is talking about while at LSU only...I think everybody knows who was the better pro...

I don't want to rehash an old QB controversy when we have our hands full with the current one, but Woodley was more athletic. He would occasionally line up in the slot when Mac was experimenting with his Two QB's At The Same Time system. Ensminger was the fan favorite, mostly because he was a local guy. Each had his strengths and weaknesses, but neither stood head and shoulders above the other. Woodley obviously developed after he left LSU.

Woodley....

he was the better runner of the 2, he could not throw the long ball like Steve, but he had a softer touch.

Can't Catch it Carson got the name because of Steve...

Steve had a cannon type arm, he could throw deep; but no touch on the ball, didn't matter 5 yard throw or 20 yard throw it was coming hot and fast.

Their 1979 stats:
Woodley 118-55-6-874-2 104.3 rating
Ensminger 175-80-8-1168-5 102.0 rating

Rushing
Woodley 81-152 1.9 7 tds
Ensminger 54-121 2.2 2 tds

The 1979 team was still mainly a run first, pass 2nd team; but lacked a Charles Alexander type.

Gajan got hurt in the USC game. Woodley was more effective with the run at the goal line.

I have their career stats on my other computer at the shop.

chollie mac didn't know crapola about qb's or the offense side of the ball. it's what got him canned. miles has the sense to hire great assistants in areas he's not good at. with 2 qb's every game neither got the flow of the game.

Both QBs were about the same as far as ability. Woodley was a better runner and Ensminger was a better passer (but not a very accurate one). They were both about average QBs. That may have been because of the 2 QB system being used at the time.

Great! Not enough drivel on here with JJ and JL, let's start a QB fued regarding 35 yrs ago.

Maybe tomorrow we can discuss Chad Loup, Mickey Guidry, maybe even Sparacino.

I have no idea why you people entertain him. he starts asinine threads and never actually stays to discuss anything. you should see how many zero reply threads he has on the OT.

Woodley had the Dolphins up 17-10 over the Redskins at halftime in Super Bowl XVII, but unfortunately, the rest of his life went downhill after that: " Super Bowl XVII Starter Woodley's Life Drifted after Football" (1.23.2008).

I saw them both play. Both had +'s. Ensminger if I remember correctly usually gave us a chance to win at the end of the game more often.

If memory serves me correctly it was the only Super Bowl Dan Marino played in as well. Marino may have been great but it took an LSU guy to get them there!

iM 50 YEARS old and was a freshman at LSU when Woodley and Ensminger were seniors. Definitely saw them play all of the games that they played at LSU which would basically had been after the 2 quarterback system of Pat Lyons and Bobby Moreau (of couse Moreau went from QB to Linebacker, I believe his senior year and did a pretty good job). Anyway, Mac always believed in a 2 QB systerm ala Bert Jones and Pat's older brother Paul Lyons and before that Buddy Lee and Bert Jones. That is the way Mac played it. All in all, i would rank Woodley and Ensminger about even. Both had their strong points and definitely remember some memorable games with them and even trickeration when Mac put both in at the same time.

While at LSU ...
Woodley = JJ
Ensminger = JL

Had there been internet back then, the same arguements you see today would have been in full force (less the racism accusations).

Woodley started in a SuperBowl with the Dolphins. I'm not sure if they won. If that means anything. I don't think Ensminger played in the NFL.

I believe your memory is incorrect. Woodley played in the Super Bowl the season before Marino was drafted. Don Strock was the other Miami quarterback, I believe.
